Costing $69.99 for 466 pieces gives a price-per-part ratio of 15 cents per piece, which is pretty terrible. The six minifigures ease that pain a little, but only three of them are exclusive to this set. The parts are not particularly interesting, the build is unexciting, and the “attack" part of the set is almost completely absent. It feels like those factors will all be turn-offs for the average LEGO collector, but I guess I can see this being a popular set for others. The callbacks to the Into the Spider-Verse and other movies will go over well, as will the multiple Spider-outfits.
I like that we have a Spider-Man set that offers something a little different to other sets. I can understand the appeal of all these random vehicles, but there don't seem to fit the character of Spider-Man. Why would the webbed wonder, who can do whatever a spider can need a bike, car, plane, helicopter or monster truck when he can swing around on webs? The answer is fun, Spider-Man sets would be pretty boring with just a Spider-Man Minifigure and some web elements. For the average Spider-Man fan, a lair and vehicles, do seem a little disconnected to Spider-Man, but as I've mentioned before, the various animated series seems to be a big influence of the LEGO Spider-Man sets. Overall, this set looks fun, which is a cool reflection of the character. The Minifigure line-up could have been better. The Iron Spider has been overdone and could have been swapped out for something a little more unique, same goes for Venom. I like the Ultimate Spider Suit, despite the confusing naming. Apart from that, it's an interesting build and mostly offers something a little new for the theme.
Maybe we would have been more generous to 76175 Attack on the Spider Lair if it was, say, £25 cheaper. At £45, it wouldn't feel too heinous, particularly with six minifigures in the box. You could even almost excuse so many of those characters being straight repeats. But at £69.99, it's just impossible to recommend. All it has to offer beyond its exclusive characters is playability, and if that's all you (or your kids) need from a toy, you might want to seek out something cheaper than a LEGO set. As it is, this is a total (web-)swing and a miss.
