A great set that fits the standards set by the modular building line. Although there were some noticeable problems with the set, it makes up for it in the long run.
Iam a huge fan of the modulars, and this is the best one yet. The outside looks fantastic,, but its the internal details that make it so much fun to build and display. When I show it off to friends, it definitely brings a smile to their faces. If you are only intending to buy one modular, make it this one. Lego, this is an absolute triumph!
The set was quite a bit of fun to build, though the stairs got annoying after a bit. I would have liked to have seen some other microbuilds for the first townhouse, the emptiness of the upper two floors was a bit of a letdown. However, those are only small quibbles given how great the rest of the set is. In fact, the first floor of the Pet Shop by itself is almost enough to justify purchase! I did dock the set for kid value because it's probably a bit too difficult (and time consuming) for kids to actually piece together the set on their own. I do think there are enough play elements though to make it worthwhile for kids, after all, who doesn't love a pet shop as a kid?
My son LOVED Legos when he was a child. Santa would give him a large set every Christmas and he would spend the vacation happily building and playing with it. At that point it was mostly different castles. Now he has a 7 year old daughter and they both LOVE Legos. They have a wonderful time building and playing together. I gave her (them) this set for Christmas. It's aimed at children much older than 7, but it was perfect for the two of them. She got several smaller sets, too, some that she could do by herself. I loved watching her concentrate so hard and have so much fun, just like her dad did at her age. I love this new city buildings theme. My son sent me a picture when they were nearly done and wrote: "Almost finished. It's amazing. Thank you! She loves it."
It's a great build, and is able to be separated, which is awesome. It's relatively playable, but with not much in the rooms, doesn't leave all that much to play with.
