I think this is the highest score I've ever given. If you missed 7191, you really shouldn't miss out on this one. In fact, you really should get this one anyway.
I've been eyeing this model up since it came out due to the outrageous price of the older UCS version. I have the UCS TIE Interceptor and it would have made a great addition to that piece. However, this build will do nicely! I really enjoyed taking my time to build it allowing all aspects to come to life. This is my first large build in some time so it did take me awhile. Other obligations kept me from staying on it for long periods of time. All in all, I love the design. The stickers on the cockpit were a pain to apply and I think it would have done better with printed pieces. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone.
There's no doubting that this is an excellent model and perhaps the best version of the X-wing LEGO has made. It's also a vast improvement over the original UCS model, both mechanically and aesthetically, but it is not without its faults.
This Lego is epic! It's the T-65 X-Wing fighter Red 5 that destroyed the Death Star! I had to pay $262.00 but what can I say I am a fan at 50. Now I see the price has gone up even more. My grandson who is now 7 got me into the Lego's. We have great conversations about them. We can talk some Lego's for sure all day. I often buy one then order him one. The big ones not so much. But I did send him the Millenium Falcon at $119.00 that is a good deal. It will be nice to pass all my sets to him one day. :).
In the end I can safely say that the new model is superior in most regards, although not without it's own flaws. I don't regret buying the original even at the inflated price I paid because I didn't know there would be a better option down the line. Now that the updated version is here I wouldn't even bother with the old one unless it was back down at the original $150 price point or better. It just doesn't hold up. Figuratively or literally.
Let's be honest, not everyone is as nitpicky as I am when it comes to things like scale, or life in general. The scale issue is only apparent if you look at the final model as a whole and compare it to the original source material side by side, and not many of us are going to be displaying pictures next to their model. But by itself it'll garner the approval from even the most discerning of fans. The true beauty of the model comes from its details and this model packs plenty of them. My fuzzy memory was working against me when trying to compare some of the details between the old and the new, but I was so impressed by the overall model, that I didn't want to sweat the details too much. The UCS line is geared towards the fan that wants something really cool to build and proudly display in their home or even their office. 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter is up to that task.
