I really enjoyed building this set, and had an even better time telling and animating the story for my two youngest! The manual is great - not only does it include easy to follow instructions, but gives some insight to the people and the stories for the set. Any set which inspires creativity, and tells a story, is a huge winner. Thank you Lego for going above the norm with this set. My girls play with this also as a playset, and it is fun to hear and watch them play.
This is definitely a set you'll want to get multiple copies of – I reckon three would do the trick. One for each of the books, and a spare to customise yourself! There are some superb elements, and unless you're like me and have your own customised ones, I guarantee you won't have anything in your collection like this set! You'll definitely want to get a copy of 21315 Pop-Up Book.
This set epitomises what the Ideas platform is for, and what it's best at: bringing sets to market that do not fit into LEGO's normal product portfolio. Jason and Grant's excellent idea has been turned into a clever and very attractive set that will have broad appeal, although I appreciate that it won't be for everybody. The minifigure selection is the icing on the cake: all four figures are superb and I would suggest better than the idea submitter's could have hoped for. I can't really think of anything negative to say about it. Perhaps printed tiles for the spine would have been nice but other than that it's pretty much perfect.
I can bang on about this set for ages, but to truly appreciate the uniqueness of the set is to see it in action. It's a simple idea that works so well. I like the detail and minifigures from the Little Red Riding Hood scene, but the movement of the Beanstalk is very impressive. Special mentions must go to the instructions, once again the highlight both the fan builders and LEGO designers involved. But also delve into the history of pop-up books and the two featured fairy tales. I absolutely adore this set, the initial idea from fan builders Grant Davis and Jason Allemann, has translated well into the final product.
All in all, I will unequivocally suggest picking it up when it becomes available on November 1. The price is good with what you get and hopefully it inspires you to build your pop-up scenes. I'm actually excited to see what fans will come up with.
21315 Pop-Up Book is a perfect example of the creativity the fan community can offer. The idea is original and unlike anything else you've got in your LEGO collection. The finished book is absolutely gorgeous, and the models contained within are clever and inspiring. (I'm sure it won't be long before we see many unique variations of book inserts and covers created by the LEGO fan community.) It's a bonus that the set comes at a great price too, fitting solidly into the “good value" category for new LEGO sets with 859 pieces for $69.99.
Those who enjoy the novelty of what this set does, which is unique within the range, will want to pick it up. For many fans though, the money could be better spent on a set that feels more substantial and offers more in terms of display potential.
In reality, every LEGO set is a story. But what makes this one special, apart from its attractive presentation, is the mechanical aspect. This makes it a potential gateway set to explore the vast possibilities and limitations of the LEGO system, most importantly using Technic elements to supplement the dynamics of basic system builds. If you find the book is too limiting for your creativity, copious amounts of Earth Green bricks will surely come in handy for whatever else you have planned.
The set has surprised me very pleasantly. I was quite skeptical when I heard about the decision, since I thought it would be very complex. On the other hand, the set has the size of any book that you can find at home. The interior has a very high level level of detail considering that it must be folded inside the book.
