It bring back memories on 1989 when I got my first Pirate set. It is great and I hope, Lego will made some more sets with Pirates themes. Me and my son love to play with it and enyoy building it.
This set took me back to my early days as a KFOL. It also fulfilled all my AFOL desires in terms of a throwback, as well as a detailed display piece. I do wish the set contained more Minifigures though. However, despite the high overall price, Pirates of Barracuda Bay is an excellent value in terms of bricks and build-time. I cannot sing the praises of this kit enough. I love it, I highly recommend it.
Overall, the LEGO Ideas Pirates of Barracuda Bay (21322) is absolutely a very fun set to build. It took me about a day and half to complete due to me taking lots of breaks in between. It definitely could be completed in one sitting.
I've become quite the fan of LEGO Ideas sets, it's a theme where creativity is key and sets such as this are the pinnacle of that. I enjoy the licensed sets, LEGO Ideas creates, as there give use stuff which wouldn't warrant an entire theme, but it's original ideas like this, which are the most fun. I adore the Tree House but I think that the Pirates of Barracuda Bay just edges it for me as the best LEGO Ideas set yet.
21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay encapsulates everything exciting about the Pirates theme! This set appears extraordinarily detailed and includes numerous references to earlier sets while concurrently offering some outstanding innovations. The most notable of these are apparent on the modern Black Seas Barracuda which closely resembles historic ships, improving upon past models in every regard.
Is it all perfect? Well... I just can't find a fault in the design or the build experience that is worth mentioning.
It carries all the charm and draw of LEGO Pirates, expanding on a universe now 30 years old, whilst also offering a fresh, playful set full of fun and creativity for younger builders.
Ultimately, if you're a fan of classic Pirates, this set is made for you, and your Pirates collection won't be complete without it. If you're not a fan of Pirates, you won't get as much joy from the many references and callbacks, but you will enjoy building a very cool castaway island refuge and one of the best sailing ships that LEGO has ever produced.
Usually I have three categories for sets: “That looks gorgeous, I'm gonna build it!", “Those parts will be handy, but not one to build" or “Meh. I'll leave this one out." This set doesn't really fit in one of these categories. It made quite the ride: from something that didn't look too promising on first glance, to a set I loved building and exploring to a final model that has great details. The overall look, however, is too overloaded for my taste. When changed into the vessel it's an amazing ship and the perfect example how a bigger size of model, new parts and new techniques can make a worthy redesign.
