All 3 of the builds for this set are well done but I definitely bought this for the Fire Dragon. It is well thought out and really looks nice added to a Lego Castle setup. Nice size and detail. The treasure chest was also a nice little addition.
The LEGO Creator 3in1 Fire Dragon 31102 Building Kit is a fun build. As the name suggests there are three different dragons that can be built. I built the first (Book 1) model as it appeared to be the most sophisticated.I had some confusion as to where the claws were to be placed. There are actually four possible locations on the legs but I used the bottom most holes on both legs for each claw. The dragon stands well and is stable so I assume that I selected the proper locations.I especially like the dragon's long tail, the nasty looking teeth and the cool looking fire that comes out of the dragon's mouth. There is a significant amount of articulation to the dragon and that enables many different cool poses and a great deal of play value. Of course, if one becomes bored with any particular version, it's an easy matter to disassemble the particular dragon and build any of the other two.
This is another solid and well-designed Creator creature pack, despite its obvious similarity to 2018's 31073 Mythical Creatures set. The head on the main build in particular is very nicely built, though it looks a bit too colourful to be properly menacing. Perhaps the wing parts would have been better in black, though no doubt collectors will appreciate these parts in dark blue as well.
Creating creatures or organic things with LEGO bricks doesn't always result in a decent looking build. But most of the creatures featured in this set are pretty cool. My favourite has to be the Scorpion, it has so many moving parts, you can get so nice poses out of it. The Dragon is a nice build, although it looks a little too similar to past Creator 3-in-1 sets. The Saber-toothed Tiger for me, is the weakest of the three builds. That's not to say it's bad, but it's not as good as the other two. Another thing is the pricing, if this set is compared to other similar creature sets from the last few years, the piece count is almost the same but the price has leaped up quite a lot.
I did enjoying building and photographing this model and the build was all straightforward which suits the target age group and it would, in my opinion, make a great present. The only criticism I'd have about all the models are the visible technic holes! Using SNOT techniques it wouldn't be difficult to hide these and would be an interesting start to enhance the set.
