The set in itself is a great one.I really like the software. But pulling it up is very slow. It is a good set. I love the good EV3 brick. All in all it is a good set. But a little pricey though.
I love this set. My kids love this set. It's expensive at USD$350, but not only is this a great toy, it's a fantastic tool for teaching kids how computers really work. And I mean real computers, not the ones with angry birds inside them.
While programming this robot, I was struck by how quickly my son was picking it up. This is a great tool for teaching robotics, programming, debugging, and general problem solving to kids. He was trying to understand how something could be done and when he saw my solution, said "Ahh, you put a switch block in the false case" I was a bit stunned :) He picked up the terminology just by using the Mindstorms software, and could at a glance see how to achieve what he was thinking. Combine that with the pure joy both my kids got out of scaring their Mother with the snake, this set is a pure winner!
In summary, the Ev3rstorm model gives you a good feel for all the different sensors and most of the programming methods. However, because it tries to include a bit of everything, it's not really an awe-inspiring robot. The other ones tend to focus on a specific feature and do that well.
I'm impressed at the quality of the model and the build instructions considering this is a not a LEGO designed robot. It is a great way to get inspired for your own projects and learn how to program the blocks in various ways. I love the Mindstorms platform as an education tool for my kids. They are learning how to program computers very young these days which I think will be very important for their future, and essential for any STEM related career path.
