This is a surprisingly detailed Lego set, and a great way to pass a half hour! I got this free with a Lego Volkswagen Beetle, and didn't think much of it. However, it was an enjoyable build and looked great when completed!
A lot of the appeal Hot Rod has for me comes from the fact that it is a freebie with purchase. I would not buy this as a standalone set. I do like it, and it looks good in my city. However, there are nicer LEGO® cars out there.
If you have either of the original LEGO hot rod sets in your collection, you really want to have this modern, refreshed version to display together with the figures. If you're new to collecting LEGO, it's still a worthy addition just for a quick yet detailed build to add as a companion to any Speed Champions vehicle collection.
This year's gift with purchases have been excellent and this one is no exception. The threshold for acquisition is perhaps a little high, but with scores of new sets being released in June it should not be hard to find something to buy in order to obtain it.
In the last few years, LEGO has stepped up its GWP output. This is a decent little freebie, especially since there aren't that many LEGO hot rod vehicles around. It's the perfect match for the LEGO Creator Expert Corner Garage modular and would certainly look great cruising the streets of LEGO City. The spend limit is a little high in my opinion, but this seems to be the new normal for LEGO GWP sets of this sort.
I love this little car. I don't own the original so my opinion isn't swayed by nostalgia. It was a fun 15 minute build with the end result looking great and has playability. Two minifigs may have been 1 too many since there's only 1 seat, it's not very display friendly with a random loose minifig, but I'm usually negative on Minifigs anyway. Overall, worth getting if you can find it for $15 on the secondary market.
2020 seems to be a great year for gift-with-purchase promotions and the LEGO Hot Rod (40409) seems to fit the bill. It also puts a check mark next to another set that hits the nostalgia factor as well.
There's plenty to reward the more curious builder, from how the front and back lights are assembled, or how the engine and exhausts are built up, to how the folded leather roof is created. What could have been a simpler build is instead filled with interesting features. With the set also packing two minifigures, there's little to fault what is one of the LEGO Group's better value gifts with purchase so far this year.
