By itself, 40433 1989 Batmobile barely resembles its source material. But as a free companion piece to the UCS 1989 Batmobile, it's perfect.
This would have made an amazing retail set. I would have bought it without a doubt, and I am sure that others would have too. It is very detailed, and true to the original movie version. Additionally, $39.99 makes an excellent value for a kit this size. Fans of this version of the Batmobile will certainly enjoy it, and it is almost a shame that you can only get it by purchasing the larger, much more expensive version of the car.
Overall, I think the LEGO Batman 1989 Batmobile – Limited Edition (40433) is one of the best promotional items LEGO has released to date. I also feel that it is good enough to be a standalone set that could be sold for about $40-$50 and it would sell like hotcakes. It does sting a little for those who just wants this set without buying the larger one. Hopefully the secondary market won't be too harsh on the wallet if you decide to go that route.
Right now, LEGO says it's only available during the week following Black Friday, while supplies last. It remains to be seen if LEGO will make the set available somehow after that period. The good news for fans, though, is that I don't immediately spot any unique elements in this set, which means it will be easy to recreate once the instructions are available from LEGO's website for those who can't justify forking over $250 this holiday to get the big Batmobile set, because every LEGO Batman fan will want a copy of this model.
There are of course small compromises like these to be had in this set's design, as there are with every Batmobile that has come before it. But, 40433 1989 Batmobile – Limited Edition's final model remains credible, pays tribute to 30-year-old iconic source material in a fun way and is available as a free gift, for anyone purchasing 76139 1989 Batmobile. If anyone seriously needed more awesome Batman LEGO to convince them to pick up 76139 this weekend, 40433 more than seals the deal.
40433 1989 Batmobile is definitely among my favourite promotional items which LEGO has released. This model captures the distinctive aesthetic of its onscreen counterpart and incorporates some great details, notably including several air intakes and the trans-yellow headlights that look superb. I like the rotating display stand too, drawing another parallel with the new large-scale Batmobile.
