I really enjoy the Brick Sketches, it's really interesting how starting from some tiles and plates you start building the character. In this model I specially enjoyed the details that differentiate Minnie from Mickey: the bow and the eyelashes. Even though I have built Minnie and Mickey of them the same day it doesn't feel repetitive at all!
Unless you're a big Mickey and Friends fan, then you'll probably be less than thrilled with these sets. LEGO recently lowered the price point of Brick Sketches to $16.99 US, which makes them feel a little less like a price-gouge. But that price is still way too high for what you get in the set – 12 to 16 cents per part, with no particularly rare or exciting elements and no minifigures. The builds here are very easy, with very little interesting in the way of techniques. And building both kits back to back was really dull. On the positive side, there's no denying that Chris McVeigh was able to create a solid and recognizable likeness of the characters within the part limitations he had to work with. As a display piece, they do work well. If you're a Disney fan or gifting them to someone who is, then there are sure to be some smiles earned from the completed set. But I'd still wait for these to go on sale before I picked them up.
Although the construction is simple: layering plates, the building experience is pretty rewarding and contrary to my initial expectations, I had a good time assembling the two sets. There is definitely a charm to the stylized interpretation of these classic characters and creating two universally recognisable characters from a pile of shapes is a fun little building experience. I have to admit, the sets are a bit expensive for what they are. A couple extra rare parts, a printed tile with a Disney logo or maybe even a minifig complementary to the subject matter might improve the desirability of these sets, but they do have their charm.
Disney has a massive fan base, which expands far beyond the realms of LEGO sets. So it's no surprise the characters of Mickey and Minnie Mouse feature so heavily across various LEGO themes. But I have to say the characters iconic look is a perfect fit for Brick Sketches style. They are a unique build experience and make an equally unique display piece. They may not have the grandeur of much larger LEGO Art sets, but they are still great little sets to brighten up a desk or shelf.
While it's not the most conventional of LEGO sets, there is still a lovely aesthetic to 40457 Minnie Mouse. The combination of smooth tiles mixed with studs is a great look and gives the unmistakable appearance of LEGO, but it's still presented in a very unique style. As a relatively cheap and quirky display piece, especially when placed next to Mickey, it looks excellent.
40456 Mickey Mouse and 40457 Minnie Mouse are among the simpler Brick Sketches which have been produced, comprising the same basic shapes as their animated inspiration. These colourful designs encapsulate appropriate personality, especially featuring such round cheeks that create the impression of beaming smiles. Minnie's eyelashes look outstanding as well.
There's not really a whole lot to talk about with these sets, but the way different plates have been used for detailing are inspired. Heart plates as a bow for Minnie, and wedge plates as a bowtie for Mickey, plus the use of grills for Minnie's eyelashes and those 3×3 round tiles – wow.
