I've bought quite a few Legos just because my son likes them, but I personally don't like Legos for some educational and developmental reasons as well as their durability (as a complete toy, not as an individual invincible block that can destroy my feet!). Said that, I like this one a lot. My 5Y.O. could build it with a little help here and there (pushing in some tight parts) and when completed, the bike is so much fun to play with. This thing can jump of course, but beyond that, this thing won't lose a part even if it falls to a hard surface from a table. In addition, you can see the gears working to drive the wheel. Totally different from the typical Legos that is just a bunch of space-filling blocks and can't be played without breaking. Way to go Lego!
So like many I got this so I could combine it with the stunt truck but it is a nice set in itself. Only two complaints: 1. you have to make sure you do not make the rear tire connections to tight otherwise it really slows it down. 2. lego decided to invert the special 40th anniversary piece so you cant see it. It is a simple fix, but just a curious choice.
If you're looking to start off in Technic building or you're looking for a gift for a child ready to make the step up from City, Star Wars or Ninjago, you could do worse than the colourful and be-stickered 42058. You could also do a lot better.
The stunt bike has a cool sleek look as well. Unfortunately it has a 3-gear drivetrain connecting the pullback motor to the rear wheel, and this juts out significantly (by 2 whole beams). In addition, one of these gears is bright red, and overall the gear train really, really hurts the look of the Stunt Bike.
If you have already got a Technic Racer or two and loved them, then this is more of the same and you will want to pick it up, especially as it is the only Technic bike at this size. However, if you have been there and done those, it really offers nothing new and will likely be an easy pass.
