The Lego City Starter Sets are amazing value for what you get, and this Space set is no exception. The four minifigures are well-detailed - you get a female scientist, a male flight technician with a hi-vis vest, and two astronauts in full spacesuit gear, one of which has a back-mounted camera and a rocket pack. I like the new gold plastic used for the spacesuit visors - I had the old chrome ones, and while those were more true-to-life they got scratched and flaky quite quickly. My one quibble with the minifigs is that the scientist is quite similar to the one included in the Volcano Starter Set - it would have been nice if there were more variety in face or hairstyle between the two, but that's more personal preference than anything. The lights and camera on tripods will work well on Earth and on the moon and can both have their height adjusted which is a nice touch, and the command console has some great computer-y parts. The moon buggy is an outstanding model that makes this my favourite Starter Set. It's a fairly true-to-life replica of the three real moon buggies used by the Apollo missions, including pieces to represent the antenna dish and video camera systems. Hours could be spent with the two astronauts exploring strange alien worlds, reporting back to the scientist on Earth. Overall, a great little set that could easily be a standalone, with excellent play value.
My son ordered these toys with money that he earned from dog-sitting a neighbor's dog. He took a lonnnnnng time choosing the exact Lego sets that he wanted to purchase because he knew how hard he had worked for the money and didn't want to waste it! I asked him what he thought of them and he said, "I loved this! This is my favorite set because there is a space guy and he's really cool. You can take his helmet off without taking him apart. I like to fly the space guy around. This is a starter set and now that I have it I think I'll try to buy more of the space sets. There is a girl with this set, too. I like that part. I do wish it had another space guy but other than that I really liked it."
This set is a really good deal whether it is on sale or at full price. You are paying less than the current average cost per brick in either case. You also get some nice little science builds. The Minifigs are also a big part of what boosts the value of this set. It is hard to get inexpensive, genuine LEGO Minifigs, but this set gets your four. If I had to summarize my complaints about this set, I would have to say that it could have used a touch more thought and planning where design of the lab bench and Minifigures were concerned.
You really can't go wrong with this one. A great selection of pieces, plus four minifigures for slightly under $10 - pretty much perfect. The buggy is probably the worst part of the set (even if it's the main "draw" on the package)...and even the buggy serves its purpose. I think this is a great little set for pieces - and personally I cannot wait to get going on my own city MOC and include a space port!
There isn't much faults I can see with the LEGO City Space Starter Set (60070). For $10, you get a really nice set with four minifigures, two of which are astronauts which can't have enough of. I do like the little builds especially the rover buggy going over the rocky terrain that's attached to the computer station. You can get a couple of these little sets to start building up your space facility then add on the rest of the sets in the summer wave to complete it.
This small starter set has all the pieces kids need to create and play out a space training mission. It is also ideal for a collector's larger LEGO display or diorama.
