5 year old who is experienced with Legos had a blast putting this together. Great gift.
Made with the substantial assistance of Mr 4 year old. Overall its a good build and looks great. The build is a little repetitive, but when you have 4 legs that is forgivable. Anything with digging or grabbing functions always gets 5 stars from Mr 4 year old (he is easy to please). A few minor criticisms; The legs have minimal rotation, a greater range would have added greatly to its play use. Also the Cab area on top of the legs does not rotate? This would have been an amazingly nice feature as he could pickup and rotate the boom arm / cab to load a vehicle of some sort. Well being lego some modifications are in order! Purchased for nearly 50% RRP, so in that sense it was an amazing good deal, but rated its value based on RRP vs Parts.
Unfortunately, I must say I'm a little disappointed by this set. The build looks fine but it isn't very fun to play with, especially since it can't walk convincingly or have its cockpit cab turn. The minifigure selection is also pretty boring, with a relatively normal-looking guy and a small rodent. The price is okay I guess, but then again there are better sets out there at this price point.
I have mixed feelings about this set. The Ice Crawler vehicle feels more like something one might find in an adventure-based play theme like Atlantis or Power Miners rather than a CITY set and its inability to turn without moving the legs is problematic. However, I do like the appearance of the crane as well as the minifigure and the brand new rodent, the latter of which is only currently available in this set.
