My newly turned 5 year old loves this. He's able to do about 75% on his own. My only complaint is price... legos just cost so much just for the name....
When I was a child my very first lego was space 924 and 6970. I play a lot with this sets. Now I buy many sets for my 3 children but the 60226 Mars adventure is a real pleasure for my son. It is simple, clear lines, many pieces and many gadget that help with the play storyboard. A perfect set to build but awesome to play with.

The main drawback of the Mars Research Shuttle is the price. It does not come at a good value. The set has a nice design, comes with good Minifigures, and a lot of play potential. It is not my favorite shuttle, but it is a good one. If you plan to buy this kit, I suggest waiting a while. 20% off sales are common, and at that price, you are much closer to an average cost-per-brick.
This is a tough set to review because if you ignore price then it's a lovely set. You get a fun shuttle and an equally fun second vehicle plus a pair of minifigures and a few other odds and ends (drone, space rock). On the other hand, a suggested retail price of basically $40 for only 273 pieces and two minifigures is a terrible deal. If you can find this for closer to $30, I'd recommend it [...].
