Ok, I was skeptical about this range. Which is why I only bought the cheapest set of the range. But saying that, I can honestly say I am impressed with this. No, the set is not an overly elaborate set that will take your hours to build. But that being said it's very effective at conveying the feel of a lab. The Minifigs in the set are really cool, with some nice new elements. But, combine this set with the app and then the set takes on a whole new level of fun. The game itself is a lot more challenging than I was expecting it to be. It requires a little more style and control than I was prepared for from a game aimed at the target audience. All in all, I am perfectly happy with my purchase and expect to be buying more from this range.
I loved this set for the science/spooky aesthetic, but be warned- this set is likely to cause upset children and annoyed parents. The app is only available f,or a limited set of phones and tablets (they are listed on Lego's site) but really that is academic. The app itself is unlikely to work once you have installed it. I have a google pixel and through reinstalling it multiple times and rebooting the phone I managed to get the AR part to work for a few hours. However, it eventually stopped working again. The theme is fun, but don't let your kids get into the app. It will produce frustration and misery. Also note- Lego sadly has a terrible track record of supporting their apps long-term. SIGH. Step up your game, Lego!
Ultimately, this set offers a nice sample of the Hidden Side theme, and is perfectly serviceable as a playset, but disproportionately pales in comparison to other sets in the Hidden Side theme at slightly higher price points.
Hidden Side products have proven extremely impressive and 70418 J.B.'s Ghost Lab is definitely an enjoyable addition to the range, albeit not as enticing as some larger sets. The model features lovely detail in certain areas but the chamber for removing ghosts appears bland and should have provided some functionality in my opinion.
It may not be the most exciting of the Hidden Side sets, but it's a great taster of the what you can expect from the overall theme. I love the little features packed into such a small set, it may not have the same playability of some of the larger sets in the range; but if you wanted to give the theme go without heavily investing, this is the perfect set.
