My 5 year old loved this set. The build was great. Wasn't overly difficult but provided him a challenge. And the play is fantastic. You can beat a set with a walking shark, a hot dog cart and guy, the big G, and a shark guy!!

Recommendation: meh 87 / 100 by John

This set was never going to be the same size as the one in the movie. That one was massive – almost twice as large as the set. That being said – the set still looks excellent. It's one of those classic sets that draws the eye on a shelf, whether it's built or still in the box. It's weird, wonderful, and instantly looks like a lot of fun to play with. After building the set, I thought it wouldn't be that hard to remove the parts that make it a mech, and just have an excellent shark model. It wouldn't require too much changing, it's that good. The colour scheme is pretty perfect and the bold red gums and white teeth stand out to make it menacing.

The set doesn't take much building yet it's still very enjoyable to put together. The use of parts and the way they have achieved the curved shape of a shark is fantastic. I also love the Sand Blue colouring and seeing so many elements appearing in this colour for the first time. The legs are a little fiddly to piece together and they do feel a little off balance at first but are actually fairly sturdy on the right surface.

70656 garmadon, Garmadon, GARMADON! is very impressive on the whole. The Shark Mech's sand blue colour scheme looks absolutely fantastic and I love the combination of traditional submarine and mech features with those of a shark. The gill slits on the sides are particularly pleasing and most of the functions work very well, as one would expect. In addition, the little hot noodle dog cart is a delight and the minifigure selection includes a satisfying array of heroes, villains and citizens to be rescued.

While I wasn't disappointed with the size of the shark mech, there's really not much inside in terms of space or play other than fitting the minifigures inside. This seems a to be a missed opportunity since it is a submarine mech and command centre. In my view, the stand-out positive about the minifigures are the two civilian heads with some great features like the braces and the expressions. I imagine the M-Tron torso will also make Nancy a popular character as these little nods to bygone LEGO themes are fantastic.
