To conclude, the LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 18 has continued successfully surprised us with another new level of design creativity.
I think this figure is quite good. She has some nice prints overall and can be reused outside of this costume party series. The new present box and balloon molds are quite nice, as is her hairpiece. However, I do feel she is a little bit plain in relation to some of the other Series 18 minifigures, feeling relatively normal amongst the costume party figures.
Overall, the Birthday Party Girl doesn't come close to the Birthday Boy when it comes to being unique. Apart from a different coloured balloon, and the gift box, she lacks the special x-factor that the boy had because of the Series 1 tile. I kinda wish that LEGO had maintained some level of parity, maybe by including a Series 1 minifigure microfig in her gift box – that would've been a really nice touch.
For me, my favorites of Series 18 are the Party Clown, Dragon Suit Guy, Birthday Cake Guy, Race Car Guy, and Cowboy Costume Guy. The LEGO Brick Suit costumes are interesting and I do like how they are able to connect to other bricks.
With each new series of LEGO Minifigures, the LEGO Design Team seem to outdo themselves and you would expect them to have run out of ideas, but they have come out swinging for the 40th anniversary of the Minifigure. The new elements are great and it will be interesting to see where they appear next. The additional of an orange baseplate is definitely welcomed although it would of been nice to have the LEGO Minifigures 40th anniversary logo printed on it or even included in a tile. Despite a few minor gripes, this series of LEGO Minifigures is a fitting and fun way to celebrate the 40th anniversary and it's always nice to have a non-licensed series after so many recent ones being based on movies.
Series 18 isn't the first series to feature costumed characters. That began with Series 3's Gorilla Suit Guy, who is arguably the first “minifigure in a costume." Throughout the CMF's history, the costumed characters have been among the most popular, especially with kids, and this series finally indulges costume fans by putting nearly all of its characters in some sort of suit. In keeping with the festive style, this is also the first regular series to use non-black minifigure stands, featuring orange unprinted stands with all of the characters.
I love many of the accessories and head pieces included with this series, but my favourite would be the tile that comes with the young boy: it is printed with as small a representation as you could come up with to be a representation of the packet that the series one figures appeared in years ago. Also up there would have to be the balloon animals. As for my favourite figures? it is a toss up for me between the cowboy, the dragon and the two figures dressed up as LEGO Bricks!
I like her new dark orange hair piece which includes plenty of textured detail as well as a pin hole for attaching a party hat. The head is decorated with matching dark orange eyebrows and a lovely smiling expression.
For the birthday party girl, she comes with a present that holds a pair of 1x1 round food tiles (a cookie and a doughnut). Once you've located the balloon in the blind bag, shake the tiny bits to the bottom corner and feel them. If they are round bits, you have the Birthday Girl.
In our opinion the LEGO Minifigures Series 18 collection is the best that's been released and we're sure many of our readers will agree. With so many unique minifigures and a costume party vibe, they will be fun to play with and display.
