To conclude, the LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 18 has continued successfully surprised us with another new level of design creativity.
I'm not a huge fan of this figure. I think he looks fairly bland and plain, and nothing really makes him amazing.
With the two Spider Suit Boys that I got, the quality control of the suits were wildly inconsistent, with it jutting out at different angles. I would've preferred it to be flush and straight down the back but when you cheap out and use rubber instead of regular plastic, these things inevitably happen. Also, the choice of accessory is a little boring – just a regular spider. A fly mould would've been a brilliant accompaniment, but nothing will truly save this minifig from shoddy manufacturing. Such a shame as Spider Suit Boy had so much potential to be a memorable minifigure.
For me, my favorites of Series 18 are the Party Clown, Dragon Suit Guy, Birthday Cake Guy, Race Car Guy, and Cowboy Costume Guy. The LEGO Brick Suit costumes are interesting and I do like how they are able to connect to other bricks.
With each new series of LEGO Minifigures, the LEGO Design Team seem to outdo themselves and you would expect them to have run out of ideas, but they have come out swinging for the 40th anniversary of the Minifigure. The new elements are great and it will be interesting to see where they appear next. The additional of an orange baseplate is definitely welcomed although it would of been nice to have the LEGO Minifigures 40th anniversary logo printed on it or even included in a tile. Despite a few minor gripes, this series of LEGO Minifigures is a fitting and fun way to celebrate the 40th anniversary and it's always nice to have a non-licensed series after so many recent ones being based on movies.
Series 18 isn't the first series to feature costumed characters. That began with Series 3's Gorilla Suit Guy, who is arguably the first “minifigure in a costume." Throughout the CMF's history, the costumed characters have been among the most popular, especially with kids, and this series finally indulges costume fans by putting nearly all of its characters in some sort of suit. In keeping with the festive style, this is also the first regular series to use non-black minifigure stands, featuring orange unprinted stands with all of the characters.
I love many of the accessories and head pieces included with this series, but my favourite would be the tile that comes with the young boy: it is printed with as small a representation as you could come up with to be a representation of the packet that the series one figures appeared in years ago. Also up there would have to be the balloon animals. As for my favourite figures? it is a toss up for me between the cowboy, the dragon and the two figures dressed up as LEGO Bricks!
The Spider Suit Boy is probably the least colourful of the seventeen new minifigures so did not really stand out to me in official images. This is still a great figure though, wearing a creepy hat with twin mandibles and four eyes. I like the metallic silver highlights around these eyes and the white head underneath looks brilliant, featuring a single exposed fang that reminds me of the Spooky Boy as well as an alternative nervous expression.
The Spider Suit Boy comes with a large spider "backpack" as well as a small, more standard black spider accessory. He is also one of the few figures with two faces - one in which he looks simply nonplussed while the other he is showing signs of being concerned about too many spiders in his vicinity.
In our opinion the LEGO Minifigures Series 18 collection is the best that's been released and we're sure many of our readers will agree. With so many unique minifigures and a costume party vibe, they will be fun to play with and display.
