I've always wanted a LEGO Nintendo partnership. Then the dream came true! This set is AMAZING full of details for the normal LEGO fan, and the diehard Nintendo fan! Great building experience, and a great display piece!
This is an absolutely magnificent set. I think it has a good chance of being set of the year, but it's up against some stiff competition!
Watching Mario slide up and jump down is mesmerising and impresses anyone who sees it. My wife doesn't share my love for LEGO, but every now and then she can't help but be impressed by something I've built, this is one of those sets. It's truly show-stopping.
Although the LEGO Super Mario theme has been somewhat disappointing, 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System is not and offers an original building experience that results in an attractive, functional model that will appeal to life-long LEGO fans as well as those who have never touched a brick before in their lives.
I do not hand out “best ever" recommendations often, or lightly. But I believe unequivocally that this set deserves such praise. By the time I was done building it, I really didn't care that I finally had my own NES after a 35-year wait — I was in love with the build, the functional features, and the silly side-scrolling TV, not a mere recreation of a gray box from 1985.
The NES is an iconic piece of gaming history and Mario is firmly tied to that era. This makes the LEGO NES a great 18+ set. The build is complex in places, in particular the creation of the segmented scrolling screen belt, but I really enjoyed building the set. There are a few repetitive sections and some slightly fiddly bits, but nothing frustratingly annoying. I heard some people say the scene scrolling can get caught as it moves, but if you make sure all the sections are firmly pressed in place, you won't have a problem. It's a shame the legs are connected to the TV, but this is a small price to pay for what is an amazing feat of LEGO engineering. In all honesty, this could have and would have been an incredible set if it was just the NES. The TV set just makes it even more fun to look at and interact with. This could have merely had a stationary screen of the Mario game and would have looked cool, the ability to make it move is impressive. It didn't need to be compatible with the LEGO Mario figure, but it brings the set to life and makes it even more awesome. There are many things the set didn't need and it would have been a great set, adding all these fun little touches take it to another level.
At the end of the day, 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System is one of the most exciting sets in recent memory. This is one that you are likely to enjoy, even if you have no experience with the original NES platform.
Before diving into the building process of 71374 LEGO® Nintendo Entertainment System in our next post, let's first take a look at its parts – starting with the new moulds that have been introduced for the set.
71374 Nintendo Entertainment System achieves extraordinary realism, potentially surpassing any previous LEGO model in that regard. The external detail is absolutely spectacular and the designers have made splendid use of existing elements to recreate distinctive shapes from the NES. I am particularly delighted with the controller and the casing around the connection ports on the console, both of which could be mistaken for their real equivalents.
