My 6 yr old son bought this with his Christmas money and has LOVED it since he got it. He's the kind of kid that builds the set, plays with it for a few days, then disassembles it to create his own creations later. He'll also put the whole set together again later. It takes him two afternoons to put this full set together (or one full day). The ONLY complaint he has of this set is that the Rancor's fingers/claws fall out easily. He lost one at church one time (yeah, a kid with a Rancor at church - hard to explain that one!) but the custodian found it and saved it for us. The Rancor is my son's favorite toy ever (at the moment). OH, and he wished the 'half naked man' came with his ax weapon instead of a chicken leg. We bought the ax pieces separately to make it more 'realistic'. The chicken leg makes no sense to us.
This is a very nice set. The minigures are all excellent, apart from the Gamorrean Guard which others have mentioned before. The part count is on the low side for a set of this RRP, but the cost of developing the Rancor must have been significant. It's fun to build and looks really good when merged with Jabba's Palace.
If you have the Jabba's Palace set, the you must get the Rancor Pit as well. It's constructed fairly well and there are some neat features. It fits nicely on top of the throne room of the palace. The only issue is that the guard tower hangs because there's no support underneath. The minifigures are ok but the rancor looks really nice. It is high recommended.
The set, by itself, is a bit stark and doesnt do much. The portcullis is nice but the technic part that holds it up is a bit of an eyesore. However the design to link with the Jabba's Palace is the best part.
Buy it! If you can get it on sale, yay! If not, don't wait too long. No collection could be complete without the Rancor and while I don't really collect LEGO, I couldn't pass this up either way. I love this guy.
