Overall I love it, from the amount of minifigures to the little detail in each of the booths, I did combine this with the old cantina set I have. So added some personal touches to it and added a few more minifigures from other sets. If you're a Star Wars fan like myself you won't be disappointed.
Whether one loathes the badge “Master Builder Series" (MBS) or not, one can't deny that the force is strong with this one as this playset appeals to a wide array of audience despite the set having the 18+ age suggestion.
Parts-wise, there's a handful of new ones on offer, most notable of which are those of the minifigures which makes this a very desirable set among Star Wars fans. The Tan bricks come in abundance and in many varieties, so if that's your colour you're in for a treat!
Overall, there selection of minifigures that are included in the LEGO Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina (75290) is very decent. There is a good number of characters that we know as well as some of the more obscure ones that were only on screen for only a few seconds.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable build. While there aren't a lot of revolutionary build techniques at play, the designers peppered the set with loads of little details that make for a really interesting building experience.
Myriad extraordinary locations appear throughout the Star Wars universe, including several which are represented in LEGO sets. I think 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina may be my favourite example, achieving an ideal balance between authenticity, play value and display value. The designer has included countless small details which compare favourably with the movie and I appreciate the unusual additions to this set, including the V-35 Courier Landspeeder.
It's not a bad model and certainly better than the other Master Builder Series set in the Betrayal of Cloud City (75222). The cantina interior is nicely designed with a good amount of detail. I do like how the bar is set between the two halves using just hinge bricks.
I'm delighted to see the Cantina finally done justice in brick form. I understand that some LEGO Star Wars fans are not that interested in these sort of large-scale playsets and would rather have a UCS ship. But you'll be missing out on a fun build, which captures the rundown and worn feel of the Mos Eisley Cantina. Plus manages to bring it to life with fun details, great use of elements and an impressive gang of Minifigures. The only downside for me is the size of the set, it's certainly a tricky one to display, due to its sizable footprint.
This is a LEGO set that brings together the detail, characters and activity of its source material in such a way that not only faithfully recreates what it should do through a clever mix of playability and display, but that also skilfully captures part of that same essence that has made and continues to make the Mos Eisley Cantina such an iconic location within the Star Wars galaxy. This is a location that on film introduced classic characters, brought conflict, continued the chase and advanced the story, and everything that should reference those things is in 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina.
This isn't a set that has a binary “buy it or don't" recommendation from us. Nor is it a set that will likely go on deep discount anywhere, anytime soon. And based on past patterns, we'd guess that buying all 7 of the rare new minifigs individually on the secondary market will likely add up to the value of the full set. If you're a huge fan of Tatooine and the Mos Eisley Cantina like I am, you might bite the bullet and shell out $350 to pick up one of your favorite locations in the whole Star Wars universe — there's no guarantee that LEGO will ever release a Ponda Baba or Labria minifig again. But if $350 for a pile of tan bricks and only 7 new minifigs seems a little steep, you wouldn't be wrong.
