This set was released to coincide with the Aquaman movie, and it was only fair to include Black Manta. Still, I was expecting more from it. The price to part ratio is average, but the size of the set and what you get doesn't feel like $40. The sub is blocky from the front with difficult to access shooters. This may be appealing to collectors because of the minifigs, and it is fun for kids to play with. Other than that, the set is pretty boring.
Aquaman and Superhero fans will enjoy building the set and creating underwater battle scenes.
All in all I have been pleasantly surprised by this set. I think the build looks fabulous – I don't know how big a role it'll play in the movie but it looks great with its sleekness and evil coloring. The minifigure selection is also good, Orm's omission is disappointing but three figures and a shark included in a set of this size is quite good. Playability is a little limited though, as there aren't a lot of play features apart from the sub's basic weaponry. The price seems fine to me though as the sub is rather large.
Super Heroes sets are sometimes criticised for their focus upon great minifigures rather than impressive models but I think 76095 Black Manta Strike fares well in both respects. The new Aquaman minifigure is perfect and I am pleased with this rendition of Black Manta, despite the inaccurate shape of his helmet. Moreover, the villain's submarine is highly detailed so looks superb on display and it includes numerous play features, all of which are incorporated neatly.
For collectors of film related or super hero minifigures then this is going to be a must-have thanks to the excellent figures included. The set itself is enjoyable for a few minutes, but definitely more appealing for a younger demographic. I found its lack of colour and interesting build techniques the main let down as an AFOL, but if you are a younger fan this might be the set for you.
