This set is nearly perfect. If you're a Batman fan you'll love it. It makes for a great display piece either on your shelf or hanging on the wall. If you have the 2019 Batmobile it will look amazing next to it, but it also looks great on its own. If you have the budget and the desire, go get it!
Despite being an expensive set, the 1989 Batwing (76161) is a great value. You get a lot of bricks and a lot of build time for the price. Additionally, the three Minifigures included are fun, even if they lack the detail of the ones that come with the 1989 Batmobile. Where the Batwing disappoints a little is the build. It looks amazing when finished. However, it has no functional elements and is missing the scissor detail from the movie. The 1989 Batmobile was a hard act to follow. As with many sequels, this one is good, but just not as good as the original.
I wasn't really expecting to enjoy this set much. I only really asked for it for Christmas because I purchased the Batmobile a couple of months earlier, thinking I may as well get both. I don't know if it's because I got the set for free but I enjoyed the build more than any other pure display set I've purchased so far. I found the sheer size of the model and interesting building techniques fun and engaging. The model you're left with at the end looks awesome. It has a real cool factor to it that models like the Saturn V just don't have. Finally the ability to wall mount this set is the cherry on top, I hope Lego make appropriate use of that wall mounting part again in the future. Objectively the Batmobile is superior but there's something about this set that I just love. I'm the sort of person that sells sets a couple of months after the build but this 1 (like the other Batmobiles) is a real keeper. If you're a fan of air/space ships, wall mounting or cool display models don't miss out on this 1.
There is something very special about the 1989 Batman film. Arguably, the Christopher Nolan trilogy of films offers the definitive big-screen Batman, but that series could not have existed had Tim Burton not already redefined what a superhero film could be with his take on the character. For those of the right age, for who Keaton will always be ‘their Batman', then they owe it to themselves to own this spectacular, accurate rendition of the Batwing. It is the perfect companion piece to 76139 1989 Batmobile, living up to the standard set last year.
Overall if you're a Batman fan in general, you're probably going to pick up the new LEGO DC 1989 Batwing (76161). It matches well with the Tim Burton 1989 Batmobile it obviously makes a great display piece to your collection. The build itself sometimes gets a bit repetitive due to the fact that both sides of the ship are pretty much the same. The details on the Batwing are decent, mainly in the cockpit area with the Joker sticker. The wall mounting feature is a nice addition for those who want to do that.
76139 1989 Batmobile was among my favourite sets produced during 2019 and substantial expectations therefore surround 76161 1989 Batwing. I think this rendition of the celebrated Batwing satisfies those high expectations, albeit without matching the remarkable precedent established by the previous model. Subtle details cover the exterior and the shaping is lovely, particularly around the wings which are deceptively elaborate in their construction.
