The book itself is your standard lego dk book, it features large photos and mini facts about the suggested builds. The builds are just suggestions of various vehicles and mini playsets which superhero minifigures can use, if you happen to have the parts, some of which are not easily found. The don't have step by step instructions, just a photo to suggest how to. The minifigure of Green Lantern is great, especially as its the only way to get this particular lantern, no boring batman or superman figure, thank you! The ship for the figure is great, it does have step by step instructions, and was easily built by my 6 year with little frustration. It stays together even when played roughly with, it was made to be played with.
I also think the book is fun. It comes with some neat ideas to get kids building their own playsets, and using their imaginations a little more. It brings a little more reusability to that box of bricks in the basement, not that LEGO really needs that in my opinion. Long story short, I think this book is worth the buy for AFOLs and kids alike.
I enjoyed the included builds immensely, and the book provides good inspiration for construction projects. The John Stewart minifigure is a welcome addition to the LEGO DC Superheores Pantheon. For a collection of relatively uncommon elements, as well as a book and exclusive minifigure, this book represents reasonable value; even great value if you can find it at a discount.
The exclusive John Stewart minifigure is undoubtedly the highlight of this set from my point of view but I am quite impressed with Green Lantern's spacecraft and the book has proven to be a very pleasant surprise. It should offer plenty of inspiration for children and an excellent range of different subject matters are covered over the 80 pages.
Overall, the LEGO BYOA books have mastered the art of mixing LEGO's popular themes with inspiration. The models are simple enough to be within reach of the average young builder, but clever enough to be fun and inspiring. The tips and parts suggestions are top-notch, and I couldn't help but create a couple of little builds when reading through the book as part of the review. The book is rated 6+ and some younger fans or less able builders may require adult assistance, but the fun storyline and bright images are sure to be a hit.
The complete package of the Build Your Own Adventure titles are always impressive, some may consider the lack of instructions for the inspirational builds as a obstacle, but I don't think a book of instructions is particularly interesting to look at, especially for younger readers. The way these builds are inter-weaved with a story, is quite fun but the biggest USP for the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Build Your Own Adventure book is most certainly the LEGO set and even more so, the John Stewert minifigure, which is definitely worth adding to your collection.
