This set is great for kids who are ready to move on from LEGO Duplo and work with standard-sized LEGO bricks, but who might not be ready yet for the more complicated builds of traditional LEGO building sets. This set is also great for travel because the pieces fit nicely inside the pink suitcase.

My daughter lost her mind over this set, so it did its job. Very cute and self contained, so it gives a play space and easy cleanup. My daughter is two and a half, and it is above her level by at least six months (maybe a little more), but she loves it. She likes having her own legos to play with when her brother has his out. It even appeals to him sometimes, and they play together or squabble over it. I think it has great long term potential.
