Can't really tell how much fun it is without playing it against someone, but it seems like pretty simple stuff. Fortunately, you get to make pirate noises while playing, which always instantly adds 600% extra awesomeness to any game. Even so, it's probably not something you'd play over and over unless you have really young kids to play with. Building was actually quite enjoyable, seeing an ickle pirate ship slowly form from this nondescript pile of bricks... okay, so that applies to every single Lego set in existence, but this is an ickle pirate ship. It looks good at this scale, and Paleface looks very cute in his oversize hat. It wasn't a boring build either, and didn't take long. And now I have lots of gold studs and 1x1 flat tiles for building other stuffs with.
My son and I LOVE the LEGO "micro" board games. He is probably on the young side of "ready" for them (at a shade under four years old)and understands little of the rules, but he helps build them, rebuild them, plays them with the family constantly and we just plain get our money's worth. These games subtly enforce key learning objectives for children his age such as counting, memorization, light strategy as well as developing fine motor skills. Did I mention they're also really really entertaining? Even as an adult I had fun building our little pirate ship and playing against my family as we tried to be the last pirate standing aboard our plank! It's serious fun for the whole family!
