Customer Video Review Length:: 1:04 Mins Overall this is a nice set. The build is surprisingly complex, it's bigger than I expected, and it has a nice, bright color scheme. My biggest issue is the motion of the arms which raise and lower the bucket - moving them by hand using the knob provided is excruciatingly slow (see video demonstration). It's also painful, as Lego provided the smallest gear imaginable to serve as the knob and your hand is bound to cramp up.This set could benefit a lot from power functions, and instructions are provided for this upgrade. Of course, you have to buy the power components separately, and personally I'm not willing to shell out an additional $40 for that. It's also not the sturdiest set I've built. I wouldn't trust it with a small child, as they would most likely destroy it. Nevertheless it's a fine set, and despite these flaws it's still on my Technic shelf.
I am halted between two opinions. First of all this set does look great. It's vibrant colors do this model justice. Compared to the 8109 Flatbed Truck and the 42008 Service Truck the new tires are way better for building in this scale. Secondly, the new tires and some new parts are introduced. In my opinion these parts are not as interesting as the ones in the 42023 Construction Crew set. Unless your name is Conchas and you really need those blue panels for your Dunechaser. So it all depends on your needs.
So, what have we learned? 42024 is quite stylish, in its multi-coloured, unadorned way, and it works quite well (if you add a proper handwheel) or very well if you put a motor in. 8/10 – if you've already got a motor. 6/10 if you haven't.
In summary, it's pretty much a perfect Technic set and one that would make a great introduction to the theme. It's not too big to be intimidating but it's still packed with realistic functionality that mirrors that on the real vehicles. It's attractive and colourful. It doesn't take ages to build, it's not too complex, but it is very satisfying to construct and also to operate once it's complete. It's my favourite Technic set of the year.
