LEGOs are great, but this is special. Makes a great gift for the LEGO lover since its extra special. Even before we get to the app, this has some neat figures. Three of the four have interesting “legs". The haunted tree is one of my favorite LEGO designs; it's creepy and whimsical. (I also love the bat.)Then, add the LEGO Hidden Side app and things really get amusing. Part of the intrigue is that it's a new LEGO dimension, and part is that it's simply fun. It is the kind of thing that, for most kids, will get a great deal of attention and excitement for a period of time, and then lose interest, but the LEGO pieces themselves will likely get a good deal of use for a long time.Overall, if you're looking for a LEGO gift with extra impact, this is a top choice. But that's JustMe.
I built this set before I saw the Hidden Side animated series, I invite the fans to watch them. It will give you all the details, the storyline is quite good. No wonder Lady E was a fierce opponent on the app.! Here is my original comment that I forgot to publish two months ago : On the playability side, this set #70428 has fewer pieces that you can move by interaction than the Graveyard Mystery (#70420) of Hidden Side: you have the tree's claws and you have the spiders and the bat coming out of the tree's mouth. I think that what makes up for that are the three ghosts chasing Jack! For once, the ghosts have a chance to win! The hunters are outnumbered; this is not the case in all sets! What is striking during the construction is the colors of the pieces reflect the night. Pale blue and black dominate, even Jack's face is blue. The shape of the tree is completely different from that of the Hidden Side Graveyard Mystery set, so the building experience is different. Although I am color blind, I find that a ghost's red face is less visible than a yellow ghost's face. I don't know if these features would have been more visible using more white, as with the eyes.
It's one of the new waves smallest sets but because of its unique take on the Hidden Side story, offers something different from other Hidden Side sets. The actual scene is a little boring compared to some of the other Hidden Side sets, but the addition of the unique Minifigures, certainly make it worth picking up.
As an accompanying set to the rest of the theme it's great to have the Hidden Side represented and the inclusion of the three ghostly minifigures will not only add tons of play value to this set but also any others in the theme. As a stand alone set though, especially as it is the first to represent the ghostly realm, it feels a little on the light side. If you are a huge fan of this theme, then definitely add this to the collection, but if you're new to the theme it is probably better to look elsewhere for now.
