Even if you're not a big CITY guy, or into the Movie sets, the novelty of a fun ice cream truck set should be reason enough to get it. It looks great just by itself on a shelf or parked in front of your Parisian Restaurant in your sprawling city layout.
Kids who have seen the movie will get a kick out of building and playing with these new characters and vehicles. However, their bright, colorful pieces don't really require kids to have seen the movie.
It's bright, cheerful, and whatever model you build, looks great. I'm really excited about this set. It looks brilliant in my city scene. I'd love to get my hands on the garbage truck model (it's another one of the 2-in-1 sets, but this one keeps me happy for a while. It has plenty of playability, lots of good parts, great minifigures, and is a new set for LEGO, with no ice cream trucks being done before.
The Ice Cream machine from Legos is the only gift my Grandson wanted for his birthday. I thought it would be difficult for him to assemble but the instructions included were easy to follow. There are two versions that can be built, instructions for both included. There are quite a few small pieces so make sure to assemble where there is room to spread out. The toy is slightly fragile after it is built but my grandson wasn't bothered by putting the pieces back together if they came apart while playing.
If you can forgive the size issue, then the van is a really nice model with realistic features and it wouldn't take much to convert into something more to scale with City 'Great Vehicles'; dropping the counter down a brick or so and removing the oversized roof should do it.
This is certainly my favorite of the 2-in-1s. The truck is superb, and nothing like what we get in City. The only issue is that the printing on the ice cream torsos is too thin, but it's not a deal-breaker. This is a fun one right here.
This is definitely a great looking set, with three nice minifigs. I think I will dismantle the Flyer and rebuild the Ice Cream Truck for display though, as that is definitely the more interesting model in my opinion.
"Ice Cream Machine" is, all said and done, a decent member of the 2-in-1 collection, where the strengths of the traditional model manage to overcome the weaknesses of the creative one. The traditional-versus-creative discrepancy was larger here than in either of the other two 2-in-1 sets I've looked at; the traditional model of "Ice Cream Machine" was my favorite one of the three, but the titular model was almost as incoherent as the Pod Racer in "Castle Cavalry," which had the excuse of having been derived from a non-vehicle in the first place.
It has a real retro vibe to it, especially the slopes at the rear. The crowning glory is the giant ice cream sign; an inspired use of the large drill part from Power Miners. My only negative observation is that the vehicle seems a little too tall. We can all remember the difficulty of stretching up to get your ice cream when we were kids, but in this set it seems the adult minifigures are having a bit of trouble too! I figured this additional height might be an issue for those of you using this model alongside other vehicles.
