Kids will get a kick out of the way MetalBeard has been put together and the various unique LEGO pieces. Whether or not they have seen the movie, there's a lot of imaginative play built into these figures that will work with other LEGO sets or action figures.
You get what you expected! This is a great Lego set for pirate-loverrrs and Metal Beard fans. The set is not in production as of this review, April 5th 2017. So I feel lucky I found it at retail price. On eBay and even on Amazon, the price is already going up.I took one star away because my Lego box had been opened and taped back together with scotch tape. :( However, all the internal Lego bags and instructions were in new condition, and since I planned on opening the box, it's not a big deal.If I was a collector and planned on keeping the set in its box, I would have been outraged. Still, again, the set was complete, so it's all good this time. It arrived very quickly. so props for that also.
Overall a pretty good set with nice playability as well as a good looking display model. The set is full of pros, a lot of which I have mentioned, and the only real cons are the slight stability issues of Metalbeard and the grip on the sword not being perfect.
I can't say I like this set much. I tried to keep an open mind despite not loving bigger mechs, but MetalBeard feels dull and ugly and this is probably the worst Micromanagers due to messy-looking sides. I actually like MetalBeard a lot more in these pictures than I like him in real life - under nice lighting his colors kind of pop, but in real life under every-day kind of light he's pretty drab.
This was a really enjoyable build and you'll be hard pressed to find a more wacky and zany pirate design. There's nothing not to like about a pirate-mech. Metalbeard is one of the more popular characters in the movie so if you're a collector, having him in your stable of characters is a huge plus. For $50, I felt that this set packed a ton of value, both in terms of the final product and the assortment of special parts such as cannons, a shark and other neat little pieces thrown in. I do wish they'd have thrown in more minifigures as I'm tired of construction people and robots but Metalbeard itself is the main draw of the set so I can see why they wouldn't pack in too much value. It looks fantastic on display like all Mechs. Build sturdiness aside, I still felt that this is one of the top LEGO Movie sets on the market for now.
This is definitely a set you will want to show off. MetalBeard is a very cool figure. The cube robot by itself would be great, but is completely overshadowed by MetalBeard. I'm pretty sure the three minifigures are still around here somewhere...
MetalBeard's mech is a mish-mash of parts, and a pretty good set for new and rare elements. Aside from the lovely greyness of Skeletron, it's the first sighting of a Dark Orange grated cheese (Element ID 6061592 | Design ID 61409), which is definitely a beautiful thing.
Once I found out Metalbeard had a shark on his arm, I was sold. After building the set, I am impressed with the level of detail put into making the mech derivative of a pirate ship and all the little details put in. The play features definitely add value to this set, and speaking of value, it's hard to beat that price-per-piece pricepoint. An overall win all around in my book.
