This set captures the comedy of the movie and incorporates all kinds of unique and humorous pieces that kids will find engaging and funny. Creating outrageous scenes inspired by the movie and the characters will keep players engaged. Kids who have seen the movie will be the most likely to enjoy this because they will know who the characters are, but it's not essential.
This was a gift for my 4 year old son. he got this present last May, it looked like a lot to assemble it took a couple hours but almost a year later my son still plays with this set while he does not play with any other sets like this one, the price was high but it is Lego's and I felt it was worth every penny, easy assembly also.
This is a set that does a lot of little things, and does them well enough. It carries good value, delivering 738 pieces for $70, good minifigs with some real reuse potential, Biznis Kitty, and those stellar builds for the battery and glue. It's not a flashy set, and it's easy to overlook, but still a good addition to the line. It's biggest downside is that it's only very good in a line that's filled with a whole lot of great, but that is a good problem to have for Lego.
This set is a real stand-out of the wave. I don't love all the LEGO Movie sets, as you'll see once I review them all, but this one is truly great. The build is satisfying, the finished model has nice playability and generally looks great, the minifigures are wonderful, and the value is good too.
I'm usually not that interested in open-plan building models like this, but it did provide plenty of play for my kids. Especially after watching the movie, they re-enacted many scenes with this set and pulled various minifigs and models from the other sets to complete it (e.g. Bad Cop/Good Cop, No Pants Guy and Metalbeard because he's cool!).
Putting bias to one side, each compartment is fun and unique with impressive details. In particular the sofa in the TV studio, the giant battery and tube of glue are superb tiny builds. You'll note we added the stickers, which is a very rare occurence for me, but I thought they added a lot of fun to the model and the parts were common enough to sacrifice.
It would probably have helped a lot if I had seen the movie prior to building and reviewing this set. Having not done so, I obviously struggled to understand what was going on, and I didn't get the in-jokes. Even so, I still enjoyed building the set - it reminds me of a wacky, anti-hero take on the Batcave, which is quite fitting given that Batman also appears in the movie. I thought that the Kragle in particular was well done, and there were lots of neat little touches like the tube of glue, the battery and the TV camera.
While $70 is a lot for a set, you do get six minifigures plus Biznis Kitty and over seven hundred pieces, so that strikes me as a good deal. I had a lot of fun building it and playing with it. Though it might not stay together for too long, the pieces will definitely help flesh out my collection. Plus it's the only way to get Vitruvius, and who doesn't want Morgan Freeman in minifigure form?
