My nephew adores Lego Sets so I was thrilled to be able to give him this advanced set. He's only 6 years old but he certainly has a knack for working working with Lego's. This one had 4 different vehicles so he had his work cut out for him. He spent the entire day building this set and finished at the end of the day. Set is my favorite yet!
Boulder Blaster (71736) is a good value set with a solid design that will please Ninjago fans. The set caters particularly well to children. The average AFOL might enjoy the details and interesting build technique, but ultimately this is a parts box for more collectors. The main draw for me was the Golden Kai collectible Minifigure. Ultimately, Boulder Blaster is not for me.
If you're a longtime Ninjago fan, or want a toy for kids who love nerf guns or shooting stuff, the Boulder Blaster is a great set that's truly unique and excels at what it's designed to do – being a bad-ass rapid-fire plane-gun toy.
Small detailing such as the sand green trims and stickers add to the overall visuals of the set. It's a great take on the original design and improves on it in many ways. For example, the handle at the back of the jet is less prominent but still adds stability to the jet when placed on a surface as well as being a great way to zoom it around. The improved cockpit canopy is also a neat addition and is much better than the one used on the 2015 version.
71736 Boulder Blaster is another fine example of how NINJAGO Legacy is doing wonders. These aren't re-releases – they're re-imaginings, and ones that take already great LEGO models and make them truly fantastic.
Overall, the LEGO Ninjago Boulder Blaster (71736) is a nice little update to the previous version which makes it sleeker and the colors more consistent. I do like that you can get an exclusive minifigure to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ninjago with the Golden Kai. The price for what you get is decent and you get one additional minifigure but I think that and combined with some newer parts on the jet resulted in a $10 price increase.
I have positive feelings about this set. The Boulder Blaster is a fun, good looking build, and the upgrades from its previous look feel like improvements. The play feature stretches across both the plane and the prison, making for a nicely unified set. The main downside of this set is the price.
The powerful Boulder Blaster is among the most recognisable vehicles from NINJAGO in my opinion, due primarily to its distinctive wing configuration and resulting shape. I have therefore been looking forward to the release of this Legacy model and I am pleased with 71736 Boulder Blaster, especially concerning its appearance. The new design includes far superior detail over 70747 Boulder Blaster and the canopy looks magnificent.
