I've scored it for its time, which may soon be over, but it's still in my opinion one of the greatest Star Wars LEGO sets. Maybe it'll be outclassed by 10240; only time will tell.
Build: Like the UCS TIE Interceptor (7181), I was surprised at how easy it was to build. The instructions were easy to follow and there were no steps I had to question. Also like the Interceptor, the wings are quite flimsy (especially when they are closed) and the engines fall off with the slightest bumps. Playability: Because of the flimsy wings/engines, I would not get this one to play with. I would only get this one for display and with the UCS TIE Interceptor displayed together, it looks amazing! Value: Original value was great. Recommendation: Collectors only for the above listed reasons. Non-collectors who want one to play with should buy one of the many X-wing Fighters (e.g. 9493).
For me this remains one of the best sets Lego has ever produced, faults notwithstanding; it was the original UCS set, and if it weren't for 7191 I probably wouldn't be collecting Lego today.
This was a groundbreaking model at the time, and is still highly sought after by collectors. Bad decisions were made on the original colour scheme, and the wing opening mechanism is very flimsy, but I guess at the time there may not have been the parts available to do it any other way.
In the end I can safely say that the new model is superior in most regards, although not without it's own flaws. I don't regret buying the original even at the inflated price I paid because I didn't know there would be a better option down the line. Now that the updated version is here I wouldn't even bother with the old one unless it was back down at the original $150 price point or better. It just doesn't hold up. Figuratively or literally.
