We had a train table that was beginning to get ignored. I purchased these along with a few other lego plates and glued them to the train table bottom. Now we have a train table and a lego table.

The best thing about these new road plates is the road is wider. Since LEGO has recently been producing wider cars it only makes sense to have wider roads. I noticed they also mixed up the roads, Instead of buying one pack of curved roads; you get a curve and a T-intersection etc. That is nice, but can be inconvenient if you only want a large amount of one road type such as straights. They are nothing like previous road plates, so if you connect them in your city they may look a little odd. I ended up buying a large amount of these new roads so I could avoid that look, but in so doing spent a lot of money. They are almost twice the price as their predecessors. They do look great with the new sets LEGO has been coming out with such as Café Corner and Green Grocer.
