What an age we live in to love LEGO – the LEGO Group are all about building great Star Wars location sets, and 75180 Rathtar Escape may be the best one they've delivered yet.

PROS: Fantastic figures and a really fun set of play features. Kids really like the brick built monsters. This set is not pretty to look at but the play features make up for it. Most of the figures are unique to this set giving it some collectable value. The modular design also means it can be stacked with others to expand the decks quite a lot. CONS: Price...this set is well overpriced per part compared to the rest of the SW line in the same wave. Get it, but absolutely wait for a 20% off sale.

There's a lot to love in this set! Beyond the easy construction and unique design, LEGO packs in the play value. Just like in the film, you can open a door to allow the rathtars to roam free and minifigures can hide in passages below the ship's deck (accessible through a secret hatch that can be opened and closed with a lever). Another fun feature is that Chewbacca's bowcaster, as well as Bala-Tik's and the Guavian soldiers' blasters all fire red LEGO studs (similar to red blaster fire). This adds to the action when recreating this battle scene, although the clear red pieces that shoot off are very likely to get lost.

I think this set is alright… the figures are pretty good and the price is okay (though expensive in the UK). However, I'm not the biggest fan of the build, as it's a little cramp to actually play in. Furthermore, there's not a lot of corridor space in terms of length, so chase scenes will be much shorter. I would skip this set in favour of another similarly-priced set like 75155 Rebel U-wing Fighter or 75179 Kylo Ren's TIE Fighter.

I do kinda like the Rathtar Escape set. But I also know that this set could have been better. If you're into Rathtars or Guavian Death Gangs, this set will be of interest to you. If not, well, there's no good reason to pick it up.

I honestly can't fault the solid construction, numerous play features, lack of stickers, and appropriate minifig selection — this is a LEGO Star Wars set that ticks off many boxes that indicate a recommendation-worthy set. It's also a playset rather than a vehicle, which doesn't appeal to me personally as much as swooshable vehicles do. The set just isn't especially exciting to me, so I chalk that up to my personal preference and won't withhold my recommendation of what is ultimately a perfectly respectable set at a perfectly reasonable price.

Images of this set did not capture my attention to the degree that many of the smaller ones achieved but it has actually been quite a pleasant surprise. The minifigures and Rathtars are excellent, as is the prison cell, while the rest of the set provides a nice, albeit unremarkable, backdrop to the action.
