I set this review at 5 stars as having a 4 year old and this set being for 4 year olds, he loves it. Spider-man is his favorite hero so that helps, but he loves playing with it! The sandman base is unique and a neat way to have him set up. The catapult is a little odd as is spider-man in a car, but its things that little kids love. Put a video review on here too that mentions 4 stars for adults as there are some minor complaints, but if buying for a young child, you won't be going wrong here. Easy to build with minor assistance as well. (Though keep in mind my 4 year old has been helping in building all ages of sets for about a year now.)
I found this set difficult to rate. I have never reviewed a 4+ set before. Additionally, I did not design my rating system for this type of kit. The sets I review are generally for an older audience. Based on my usual criteria, Spider-Man and Sandman Showdown is just a passable set. However, the Minifigures might appeal to adult superhero fans. This Spider-Man comes in other sets, but Sandman is unique. Additionally, the kit is not a bad value if you think of it more as a Minifigure pack and not a standard set. If you are a Spider-Man or superhero fan in need of a great Sandman Minifigure, then go for it. Maybe wait for a sale though.
76172 Spider-Man and Sandman Showdown is an adequate 4+ set in my opinion, providing superb play value and including some interesting elements. The yellow Technic pins with low friction seem notably intriguing, especially given their present exclusivity. I imagine light bluish grey would be a more suitable colour in most situations though and I hope those are not being replaced altogether.
The star of the set is Sandman. The character has featured in a couple of different Marvel sets and I have to say this is the best version so far. It uses the same elemental swirl piece for the bottom half of the character, this was first used in the NEXO KNIGHTS theme before being recoloured and used for Sandman in the Sandcrawler set from last year. This element combined the one brick yellow arm and sandy print detail on the torso, does a decent job of conveying Sandman's shapeshifting powers. For the cost of the set, it's definitely worth picking up just for Sandman.
If you're a fan of the Spider-Verse, these sets should have enough to be interesting to you from the character standpoint. And if you're just looking for silly Spider-fun, or a gift, they're probably a safe bet, too. But if you're looking for non-minifigure LEGO reusability…maybe wait for a sale unless you're really fond of yellow Technic pins, obviously.
All up, these sets are good fun. The minifigures once again are great, and young Marvel fans will get a lot of enjoyment from playing with them.
