The Tower of Orthanc as a whole set is one of the best sets I've built in a long time. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, this is one of the sets you have to pick up. All the detailing that LEGO has put into not only the tower itself but in the Ent too is absolutely amazing not to mention the sheer size of the structure blew me away. There are many details in the set that you will find that played a big role in the movies and you can also remake some of the scenes as well. I enjoyed building it very much although there are some parts that you build that get a little repetitive. One of the things that LEGO could've done to make the set even worth it is to include a couple more minifigures. Although you get five minifigures, which a couple are exclusive to the set, maybe a couple of the Hobbits or Uruk-hai/Orcs would have been nice. The price of the set might scare some potential buyers away but it's worth the $200 price tag. Overall, the Tower of Orthanc makes a great play set or a display piece. Now if I can just find a place to put it.
I own quite a few of the more iconic sets of this kind of size from recent years, 10188 Death Star, 10228 Haunted House and 10212 Imperial Shuttle spring to mind in particular. This set certainly joins those as among the best sets in my collection. Simply put, the detail, playability and displayability for this set are all outstanding and this is by far the best set of the Lord of the Rings theme.
This monster is a joy to build and to own. A must for any die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, and a great set for any LEGO Collector.
I bought this for my wife for mothers day. Because what says thanks for firing out two kids better than a THREE FOOT TOWER OF LEGOS???
I had a huge blast putting this set together. Watching the tower go up was nothing short of awesome and putting in the little fittings here and there encapsulated everything I love about being a Lego fan. From a design standpoint, massive kudos should be given to Lego's design team which has managed to capture the essence of what the Tower of Orthanc is all about. As a playset, it delivers with all the tiny details that give each room heaps of character and flavour. As a design piece, it's a masterpiece. It will impress your friends and most importantly, it will look damned impressive when you put it on display.
