One of the best sets of 2015, puts normal retail sets to shame. A must buy set for LEGO fans.
I first thought this would be worth the 60-somethin' dollars. I was wrong. Somewhere around the time when I build the call box, a piece was missing. Same happened with the TBBT set. I've learned now. Despite being filthy rich like my username says, I'm not doing this unless some one else gets me A LEGO ideas set with their money. Italian, out!
The ultimate Lego set ever for any Whovian. Two Doctors, Clara, a Weeping Angel (one of the most frightening aliens from the modern era of the Doctor) and two Daleks (the most iconic aliens from Doctor Who). And you get the TARDIS with both the exterior phone box and the console. Although it may look like a small set it is bigger on the inside. Multiple sets will be coming to our house. One for display and others for the kids to play with. If you are a Doctor Who fan, then you cannot pass on purchasing this set before it goes out of production and can only be found for astronomical prices.
Overall, this IDEAS set is very faithful to its source material and pretty rich in both details and minifigs (counting the brick-built Daleks in this category for once). The colour scheme, though guided by the original one, is well done and harmonic. Moreover, you get two models, which can combine into a bigger one or be used separately, for both play and display purposes, and also offer great potential for mod-ers and moc-ers.
There's a lot to love in this set, like most Ideas sets, but it feels like it could have been even better with just a bit more on LEGO's end.
If you're a fan of Doctor Who, this set is a must-buy. It's pricy at $60, but you do get 623 pieces which turn into two Doctors, Clara, two Daleks, a Weeping Angel, a police box, and the main console. That's a lot of stuff, and it all looks great.
The TARDIS interior is full of clever and fun techniques, excellent part choices and a couple of nice new printed parts too. Most of the printed tiles used on the console are existing prints but there are also two 2x2 road signs with clip in Dark Stone Grey [TLG]/Dark Bluish Gray [BL] (6132560|15210) and a 2x2 round tile in Light Bluish Gray (6132558|14769). The latter looks a bit like something under a microscope!
Quite simply, it is fantastic. Every aspect of it. Perhaps the 12th Doctor's coat is not quite the right shade but I can live with that. It successfully captures the 'bigger on the inside' concept of the time machine and both interior and exterior models are superb. Plus, the Daleks are cute.
This is a really fun set, though it didn't induce squealing in me like Wall-E did. If you're a hardcore Whovian, this set is a must-buy, obviously, and even a negative review from me wouldn't have dissuaded you. But for sheer variety of useful minifigs and parts — all that dark blue especially — I'd be hard pressed to find a better value in a mid-size set.
This set is a great addition to the LEGO Ideas line. For me, the standalone Tardis police box is the highlight of the set. It will take up rare real estate on my desk :) If you are not a fan of the series, like other highly themed LEGO Ideas sets, it's probably not that attractive. The rare minifigs might make a good investment though, if you're into that sort of thing.
