This is one of those outstanding LEGO sets that absolutely delivers from every aspect – price, build experience, design, interactivity and just how damn good it looks on display.
This is definitely one that will appeal to fans of space and exploration for play and display as well as those that enjoying testing their building skills. With such a big build, this set engages older kids in constructive play as well as some cognitive thinkings as they work to piece it together.
I love everything about this set and I would anticipate that demand for it will continue to be significant as it will appeal to builders and collectors alike. I cannot give this any higher recommendation and I'm hoping that if you were in two minds about whether to purchase this set I may have just swayed you.
The set will appeal on many levels: it's a solid build with excellent techniques. It's got a good selection of parts, and it's a scale model of the most iconic launch vehicle of the 20th century. The Saturn V deserves a place on any LEGO or Space fan's shelf. Plus, even if you just want it for the pieces, it's a bargain at just over $0.06 per part.
My five year old son and I built this over the course of a few weekends and I have to say it's one of the best Lego builds ever. The size of the finished product has to be seen to be beleived as photos don't do it justice. After every stage I thought, "Wow, this is going to be big", but even after it was complete, I was still startled by its size. About 70% of the build was simple enough for my five year old to do (especially the outer surfaces), though I was on hand for some of the trickier bits. Some of the internals were more challenging and utilised some interesting techniques leading me on more than one occasion to admiringly say "Now that's clever!". :-) A nice mix of techniques meant that we both got a lot out of our joint build. Definately recommended!
This LEGO Apollo Saturn V is the biggest and imo the best Ideas set to date. Terrific detail and the completed rocket is over 3 feet tall! Can be displayed upright or horizontally on stands. Fun to build and beautiful to display! But... the retail price of this item is $119.99. It is a new release and very popular, sold out on Amazon and the LEGO site as soon as it was available. It should be in stock at the regular price again once they catch up to demand, so don't shell out extra money to these third party "marketplace" sellers unless you have money to burn and don't care about wasting it. And even then it's good idea to pass and not reward these sellers... they are the reason the set is out of stock, they buy them all up so they can turn around and gouge you! Cheers!
LEGO Ideas sets always score higher in my book for collectibility, as they're often unique. This set is no exception. If you're even remotely a fan of Classic Space or space in general, then this set is for you. It's an iconic set that I believe will live on for a long time to come. If you can get it now while the price is good, do so.
I really, and I mean really, enjoyed building this set. I wasn't sure at first if I'll keep it assembled after the review, but now there's no doubt I'll display it somewhere at home. Truly one of the best Lego sets I've seen recently! If you're interested in space, you'll get this set. If not, you'll also get this set! There is a lot of things to learn during the build, and it makes a great display piece.
Historical, educational, a showpiece… what more reasons do you need to get this set?

21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V could well be my favourite set! The model is of exceptional quality, with an authentic design for its entire height and some tremendous functions which offer considerable play value as well as numerous options for display. The construction is thoroughly enjoyable despite instances of repetition and I love the tiny astronaut microfigures included to show the sheer scale of this technological wonder.
Saturn V is amazing to build and has some fantastic techniques that are all hidden when the model is finished. The ease of separation of each stage to allow play is a testament to the skilled scaffolding underneath the outer covering of the model. I found myself thinking “Whhaaaaat, this is mad and brilliant..." as some of the techniques were so unexpected for me.
A very well constructed set with a palatable price point that makes it a definite must-have for space fans. If there is one word to describe this LEGO set, it would be “huge". It stands a full meter tall which would tower over any other model in your LEGO Space collection or any other collection for that matter.
The size is pretty deceptive from photos. Knowing it's 1m tall doesn't really prepare you for the thickness and solidity of the whole rocket. The detachable stages and command/service modules are fantastic. The ability to extract the Lunar Module and dock it with the Service Module is neat, as is it's ability to separate it's ascent stage. The launch escape tower is the only slight annoyance making this kind of play a little cumbersome. I'm a huge space fan, so this set was an automatic must-have from the moment it was announced. Now I just have to figure out how to display such a huge model :)
