40407 Death Star II Battle is very small and it's not a better build in person compared with how it photographs. Design wise, it disappoints, both in execution and in what is really just a missed opportunity. The limited piece-count most obviously short-changes the A-wing and TIE Interceptor (the point has been made that there are better versions of these even in the advent calendars) and this concern is matched with a surprisingly sparse colour palette that suffers from being 95% light grey. Together these issues make it feel like an interesting build concept that could have been achieved better.
Despite my reservations about the A-wing, it's not a bad freebie and will look great displayed alongside the other two. It's a shame I don't have the Endor one to be able to do so...
Overall, the Death Star II Battle (40407) is a fun set that tries to recreate an iconic scene from the Star Wars movies. It does make a good desk model and goes good with the Battle of Hoth (40333) and Battle of Endor (40362) from last year. The two ships are the main focus but the whole trench area is not too shabby especially with the greebling used to not have it with a lot of studs exposed.
Death Star II Battle is a fun little set that fits its niche well as a simple, small microscale depiction of one of the best moments from Star Wars. What's not to like, except that I'd love to see more sets like this. It's particularly fitting (and surely no coincidence) that the set includes an A-wing since LEGO's only other new product available for May the Fourth is the Ultimate Collector Series 75275 A-wing Starfighter.
