This set being a free gift, you might say I've been too harsh on it. I'd counter by saying that LEGO can do awesome free gifts that are much much better. The Micro Diagon Alley GWP from 2018 is case in point. That one felt like a lot of care was put into it to make it a premium gift, with pleasing designs, printed parts and all.
I do enjoy a new BrickHeadz release, but I'm surprised that this particular set is being offered as a promotional item, especially as it would have a retail value of around £20. I'm assuming the set isn't going to be sold separately, although this hasn't been confirmed. This could be annoying for those who have been collecting the range over the last few years. Especially as the spend limit to get one free is quite high and limited to Harry Potter purchases. But regardless of how you can get hold of one I quite like the build of the two characters. They both do a great job of capturing the look of both Hagrid and Buckbeak, whilst also staying true to the stylised appearance of BrickHeadz characters.
I like Hagrid very much and it's great to have him in BrickHeadz form to display alongside Harry, Hermione, Ron and Dumbledore. I'm not so keen on Buckbeak and would have preferred another human character, although I concede that it is at least different and thus interesting.
Hagrid and Buckbeak are a really fun set to build and would go well alongside Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the rest of the Harry Potter BrickHeadz line in your collection.
As a freebie, this is a very good one. If you managed to get one, you're in for a nice little build.
BrickHeadz knows what it is in identity and plays to its strengths well, and 40412 Hagrid & Buckbeak is no exception to this. As a free gift with purchase, it's a higher value item than a lot of previous GWPs and a neat duo for Harry Potter fans to sit somewhere on display.
