The detail on this Porsche replica is stunning. While LEGO builders can play with their finished Porsche as indicated by the amazing real-life functions like the steering wheel, turning tires, and the suspension mechanics, it's intended for display. This is a very large set and will take quite a bit of time to build but that's the intention with this set, which is for ages 16 and up.
If you'd like to experience a LEGO set unlike any other, I highly recommend this set. It will completely alter what you would typically expect from a retail LEGO set and open up your eyes to the complete LEGO experience at its finest. Like a luxurious sportscar, it comes down to the entire experience – the emotion, prestige and pure exhilaration that can only be evoked by a Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
This set is an absolute joy to build, very detailed instructions make the step by step building process easy to follow. The set is excellent quality and looks fantastic once finished. Would recommend having some experience with Technic sets as some parts can be fiddly but I think with a bit of time and patience anyone could pick this set up and complete it. I would highly recommend this set to anyone considering it.
This is not your lego from the 80's, this is definitely more advanced and fun to build. It's a really big build too, and when you see that the designers gave this vehicle working camshafts and cylinders, a gear shifter that has F/N/R (Forward, neutral and reverse) which, when you adjust it, it actually changes the way everything rotates (if you're just looking at the cams/engine and rolling the wheels to see the motion, like I did), plus steering and shocks...I'm adding photos so you can see the steps, from opening each of the 4 boxes, and the manual for it is well over an inch (2.5 cm) thick.
Huge, deep and luxurious , but it is not without its flaws. This set will appeal to hardcore AFOL, Technic and car buffs, but may genuinely have limited appeal outside of these realms.
One word of caution, make sure you follow the steps or else you'll be regretting it later on. Because these aren't your typical LEGO builds with the bricks, you can't just easily take it apart and put it back together. Let's just say I've learned my lesson on that. Of course, you can modify it to add Power Functions to it but I'm not qualifed enough to speak about that. In the end, it took me roughly around 10 hours spread out a couple days to complete.
TLG definitely brings a unique experience, and I really like the looks of the model. However, the feeling that this "could have been" a better set predominates. That being said, I still think it's a must have for every LEGO Technic car enthusiast. It looks cool when you put it on display. And it offers lots of possibilities to modify.
This set has raised the bar not just for LEGO Technic models, but for LEGO models as a whole. The presentation is superb, making every step of the process actually feel like you're handling a premium product, and the end price of $299 actually feels like a steal. This is a model you'll want to display on your solid oak desk while you glance out of your corner office from the top story; if you don't have an oak desk or a corner office, you just may feel as though you did after building this.
In the end it boils down to this: is the set worth the price? That's a very personal matter. The premium packaging, the beautiful book and the "gourmet" building experience certainly make the set feel special. If you are a fan of sports cars, especially of Porche, the set is definitely for you. If what you are looking for is a lot of cool mechanics in a large set and a B-model to build when you get tired of the main one, there are other LEGO sets this year that better fit your profile.
This is a display set and it loses some playability because the steering wheel and paddles are hard to operate. I can see how licensing affects the price; however, the benefits of LEGO producing a set like this has advantages for both companies and I believe it is a privilege to have LEGO knock at your door to produce something from your stock. The packing is superior to the usual LEGO boxes and the instruction book is more like a coffee table owners-manual. The release of this set has been hugely anticipated; I would definitely purchase this set although I realise that it is expensive.
It is a rather extraordinary set that is a true marvel in the technical field and utterly pleasing to put together; a lengthy build with a few exciting new building techniques. Most of the fun is in the first half, when assembling the gearboxes and paddle shifting/steering unit. Placing the overlay to complete the chassis is very rewarding. The completed car is extremely big; bigger than the box it comes in!
