While the set is brilliant to both build and play with, it's not easy to play with it, as a good chunk of the sections need to be removed to get access. Now, I understand that this is the case for modulars as well, but in this case it negates the need for ladders. It's honestly the smallest thing, but I had to try to find a flaw somewhere!
This is one of the best lego that our family has built. We have 3 boys and it was such an enjoyable build. Our younger son loves the mini figures and smaller builds while the older sons handle the more technical aspects. It is a massive set for the price and took us all of two days to build. The playability will keep the kids busy for hours plus it is just a beautiful set to look at. If you like the Lego movie then this is a must have in your collection.

Welcome to Apocalypseburg is is epic. The set has a really high price tag, but you are really getting your money's worth in terms of design, build-time, exclusive Minifigures, and entertainment. The value per brick also good, though not the phenomenal, single-digit number you might expect from a set this size. This set has given me hours of photography, and who knows how many more of simply exploring and being amazed by the whole thing. This set is definitely worth the purchase, and I highly recommend it.
A fantastic set. Building it was absolutely fun and challenging. Not in any way repetitive steps and around every corner a new story. By looking at the finished model you would just wish you were a minifig yourself so you could wander around in Apocalypse Burg!
Larger models usually offer an enjoyable buildings experience and 70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg certainly follows that trend, exhibiting numerous unusual techniques and some wonderful pieces. I was particularly impressed by the design of the Statue of Liberty's head which is incredibly intricate and the rigidity of the arm is impressive too, demonstrating exemplary integration between System and Technic elements.
Extraordinary models have been produced for each LEGO movie so the weight of expectation upon 70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg is considerable. Fortunately, I am thoroughly impressed with this set. It looks absolutely magnificent when completed, capturing every feature that one might expect to encounter in a post-apocalyptic world and incorporating numerous superb details which only become visible under close inspection.
It's easily the best set from The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part's range, and it will remain as one of the best releases of 2019, undoubtedly. A luxury LEGO set in every way. Not one that everyone will be lucky enough to own, but one that everyone should try to own.
NINJAGO City set the standards for LEGO Movie D2C sets and that's probably my favourite ever set and build. So this had a rather high bar to reach. In fact all the large-scale LEGO sets based on the various movies from the Sea Cow to Joker's Manor have been mighty impressive. But there is a new champ in town and words or indeed pictures really don't convey how impressive this set is.
As a finished model, Apocalypseburg is an excellent LEGO set. It's impressive in both its scale, and in the detailing which covers every surface. Wherever you look, the model is packed with fun details, functional-looking machinery, and clever constructions that look like repurposed salvage.
Large LEGO sets can be notorious for repetition during the building process, but allow Apocalypseburg to break the habit as one of the most entertaining experiences. The set follows a style of busy, detailed structures in a controlled environment which is a method successfully trialled by 70620 Ninjago City. Every segment tells a story and you can't be sure what it is until it is built. What might seem like a cute torture chamber, turns out to be just an improvised barber shop. Allowing comedy from the film to seep into the set is a bonus perk of the LEGO Movie 2 theme, and Apocalypseburg makes the most of it by packing every room with Easter eggs and funny pop culture references.
I think 70840 makes for a pretty great set. It's a striking display piece clearly aimed at the TFOL/AFOL market, packed full of well-thought details, masterful brick geometry and delicious parts. The minifigure selection is large and - as it includes several exclusive characters - valuable to collectors. While this direct-to-consumer mega-set may not have the same level of complexity or cohesiveness as my personal gold standard for LEGO products of this kind, Ninjago City, it's definitely worth picking up if you can afford to!
