If my review of Benny's Space Squad wasn't clear by now, this one gets an instant "must buy" rating for me. It's so good, in fact, that I hope to get at least one more copy of this set to put aside for my 9-month-old when he gets older. I want to be able to introduce him to some of daddy's favorite themes and there's no guarantee that LEGO will ever return to the space stuff that I grew up loving.
It's undoubtedly going to be one of the most popular sets this year, and I suspect that shops will have a difficult time keeping enough of them in stock, judging by the universal demand from LEGO fans. I hope LEGO made enough of Benny's Space Squad to go around as they'll be snapped up even at full price. Even at full price, this set is an incredible steal. 70841 is everything you could ever want from a Classic Space set, outside of a 1:1 reissue of 928 Galaxy Explorer.
Everything you could ask in an inexpensive set, it manages to capture the feel and memories of what it was like to get a little set as a kid. It's a perfect fusion of what LEGO used to be and what it does now. You cannot go wrong grabbing one or more of this set.
The vehicles and accessories are way cool, but I mainly bought this for the Classic Spacemen. I have literally bought 8 of these sets (so far at least). This is my favorite set of 2019. Great job LEGO! I'm really hoping for more Classic Space remakes in the near future!
Benny's Space Squad amounts to what is essentially a classic space 'battle pack' that includes four minifigures at an MSRP of $10 ( despite the relatively small amount of pieces included, the minifigures alone are worth that price). Even for those unfamiliar with Lego's original Space themes, there really isn't a reason for any Lego fan to not buy this wonderfully nostalgic throwback set at the price point it's offered at.* Ideally, the public response to this set may further prove to Lego that there exists a sufficient amount of pent-up demand and hence money to be made in regard to incorporating aspects of their non-licensed Space themes into their future product line.*Demand is high at the time of writing, but I would urge anyone to refrain from purchasing at inflated prices higher than $10, as supply will eventually meet demand for mass-retail sets sooner or later.
This is a great set: I love the range of minifigures (although I almost want a non-preloved version of Benny – a typical Blue Space man. There are a couple of issues I had with attaching a minifigure on the Moon Buggy while there was an accessory clipped into the model. But we muddled through and found a compromise.
Every once in a while, there comes along a small LEGO set that is pure LEGO goodness for the fans, almost like a thank-you note to the fans from LEGO. In 2014 it was The LEGO Movie's 70818 Double-Decker Couch, now in 2019 it is this set, 70841 Benny's Space Squad.
LEGO Movie 2 70841 Benny's Space Squad feels like a set that we don't deserve. Everything about it — its price, number of minifigures, its concept and designs — looks and sounds like something that cannot exist among modern LEGO themes and series. The set is what LEGO looked like 40 years ago — and it still works perfectly fine today. And, no doubt, the set will be praised by many toy photographers who are in love with not only LEGO minifigures, but also LEGO Classic Space characters. This tiny set has so many things to love about it that it simply leaves absolutely no space for any criticism.
I cannot emphasize enough how awesome this set is especially with the low price point across the globe. It is great value for money and it also introduces the Classic Space theme to the newer generation.
Whether you grew up with Classic Space sets during the 1980s or have only recently encountered the series, 70841 Benny's Space Squad is a phenomenal set! It contains a brilliant selection of minifigures and represents a perfect combination of old and new in my opinion, capturing the essence of the early designs from Classic Space but using modern elements where necessary.
Overall, The LEGO Movie 2 Benny's Space Squad (70841) is a great value for what you get. Not only are you getting four different colored astronauts, you also get some small builds that pay homage to some of the older Classic Space sets.
Sure it maybe a small set and the minibuilds aren't overly exciting but the real draw for this set is those excellent minifigures. I can't wait to see how the crop up in the movie, but even if it's a fleeting appearance, that's more than enough of an excuse to have a set with four Classic Space minifigures in it. At just under a tenner the set is also great value as well.
This set is a must-have. Given its low price point and the desirability of the minifigures included, it will not be a case of whether to buy it, but how many copies to buy.
