Despite only being used as a background vehicle in the movie, this set is an admirable little one. The build is sufficient (a touch better than the previous Lego Batman Dune Buggy, because apparently we live in a world where we need two within relatively close release windows), and Batman is basically the same one we've gotten a thousand times across this line, but Captain Boomerang is definitely worth the buy. He's in his classic attire, with dual-molded legs and above-and-beyond printing across the whole figure. About the only thing he needs is a white bandana piece from the old cowboy lines to be complete, but since I don't think The Lego Group regularly makes those pieces anymore, it's forgivable.
I got this for £12.99 from Argos and it's a really fun little build, the minifigures are great and one is exclusive to this set. Another winner from Lego.
This is a vehicle designed for fun, ones that embraces Batman's penchant for having bat-vehicles for every occasion, however outlandish. It is cartoonish and it is over the top, just like the design for the Captain Boomerang minifigure. Nothing about 70918 The Bat-Dune Buggy is necessarily bad, and, even if the junior elements put you off – or frustrate you as a more traditional LEGO Batman fan fatigued by the black-suited LEGO Movie version of the Dark Knight – it's still worth noting that this is a set that compares very favourably with the Bat-dune buggy that appeared in the DC Super Heroes release 76056 Batman: Rescue from Ra's al Ghul. That's a highly flawed and disappointingly basic design from a wildly over-priced set.
Yeesh, that's a really hard price to stomach. I am aware the price per piece is perfectly fine, but I don't go by that, and I think the price is definitely way too high. It just destroys all the good of the set.
70918 The Bat-Dune Buggy has proven to be a lovely surprise. The brand new Captain Boomerang minifigure remains my favourite aspect of this set, as expected, but the dune buggy is excellent too, including impressive detail throughout as well as some marvellous functions. I particularly like the rear suspension which works very well but does not interfere with the appearance of the model at all.
