If you're fortunate to own Vader's TIE advanced, I'm sorry that you're going to need two of these guys to do a proper display. Otherwise, I'm thinking that I need to display this one chasing after the X-Wing… and you probably still need two.
This is a highly collectible, buildable set that will stand out in any Star Wars display or collection. The TIE Fighter is an iconic ship from the Star Wars saga, and fans will enjoy building it as much as they will enjoy displaying it when completed.
This is another good build from lego. I don't have alot of the UCS builds but sets like this one makes me want to go out and collect them all...just need to find the room for them! I found the build itself straight forward and not many challenges. I do like the new way they decided to connect the wings to the main body. It was different and interesting enough to make me want to see it in more sets. I do want to point out that it works for me because this set is for display only but someone buying this large set (as a UCS not sure why you would) to play with, the connection could be risky with swoops and swinging the Fighter around. I also like that the included the stand like most UCS, it just gives that extra pop to the display. Others have mentioned pairing this set with the Darth Vader Fighter, as I also have that as well I find this set slightly bigger and to me at least seens out of balance when the two are placed side by side.
This, like all of the Ultimate Collector Series pieces, makes a great display. It's a fun but slightly repetitive build. It is much less complex than the Slave I, which is by far my favorite Lego Star Wars ship ever. But this Tie is probably my second favorite. It is quite large, and displays very well. It does have some playability and is quite sturdy, but it is clearly designed to be displayed. I think that 14+ build grade is actually a bit high. It is nowhere near as complex as the Slave or even Ewok Village. I think 12-14 would be more appropriate as my kids (6 & 8 with lots of Lego-building experience) could get this one with very little help.
It's probably time for me to confess that I was a bit unsure about this set when I saw the first publicity shots, more specifically the somewhat jagged appearance of the outside of the cockpit resulting from the use of offset slopes to approximate the contours of the TIE Fighter's curved body. My reservations turned out to be largely unfounded, though – while the effect can look a little jarring at close quarters, take a few steps back and the model can be admired as a pleasing and quite impressive representation of the subject material.
