Good experience over all. Physically larger than you'd expect based on the size of the box. A lot of interesting buildups of internal sections. Looks amazing. The pilot minifigure is outstanding. The instructions could have been something like 15-20 steps less without some entire diagrams to add a single brick or plate :) Downsides: the promised 2 sticker sets for the canopy were not there (as reported in many online reviews already). The engine mounting leaves...a lot.. to be desired. I has one technic peg to hold each module on. Mine quite literally fell off multiple times while flipping model over. Going to self remedy so they don't fall off if any friends lift it to check it out. I'm taking a brick off the review for that issue, which, i don't feel is trivial. Much like the UCS Falcon of a couple years ago, i dont want to feel like parts are going to just fall off by gently handling the model...
75275 A-wing Starfighter feels like a labour of love, with real attention to detail paid to the source material leading to a finished model at a satisfying scale. It makes for a worthy of addition to the Ultimate Collector Series and will add a striking splash of colour to a shelf full of such sets. Quibbles with this release are very, very minor – this is the first time the A-wing has been captured as a UCS model, and fans will not be complaining if it is also the last.
It's hard not to love the finished model as a display piece, and the incredibly complex build was very enjoyable indeed. It's also important to remember that this is the very first UCS-scale A-wing, filling a major gap in the UCS line of LEGO Star Wars sets. As I consider the set in its totality, all of the points I made above criticizing it feel like nit-picks, as valid and (hopefully) objective as I intend them to be. In other words, the UCS A-wing is much more than the sum of its imperfect parts.
Accurately capturing the aerodynamic aesthetic of the RZ-1 A-wing Interceptor is undoubtedly the most important aspect of 75275 A-wing Starfighter and the designer has succeeded. I love the shaping of the fuselage and the exterior appears appropriately smooth, despite comprising multiple sections which are attached at varying angles. The sides seem particularly impressive, curving in multiple directions. However, compromises are apparent. The nose has been truncated when compared with the movie and gaps do become visible when viewing this model from certain angles. Furthermore, the exposed Technic elements inside the cockpit are disappointing and the A-wing Pilot seems unexceptional, although minifigures are not usually the focus of Ultimate Collector Series sets.
The UCS A-wing is nothing short of a gorgeous ship. Even the choices of which surfaces to be tiled and which to be studded seem intentional in a way that reminds the viewer that this is a LEGO model without detracting from the streamlined look of it all. All in all, the set does an excellent job of capturing its sleek shaping, resulting in another model that's being displayed in the living room (whether my roommates like it or not [they do]).
