I'll start by saying that I've built just about every car in the SC line once or twice and for some strange reason they never get old. They all incorporate a number of similar or exact same pieces but they have major differences that keep each of them fresh and unique to build and the McLaren 720s is no exception. Choosing this McLaren for source material is a little odd and unique to begin with and it seems it took a number of new pieces in a new color (orange) to try and get that front end as close as possible. Tough stuff. I love those new curved corner pieces in combination with the plates and quarter tile pieces on the front end and how they leave the open space for the headlights instead of using stickers. It doesn't exactly replicate the real thing but it's a fresh build with new pieces in a new color! I also like how the wedges were used on the bottom sides. Little things like that keep it new. Speaking of new how about the wheel cover design? I believe that the design is actually licensed by McLaren so that's a neat bonus. As far as decals go this set doesn't have a ton of them and they are subtle and symmetrical and accent the car very nicely. I especially like the one on the engine cover. It accents the transparent piece on the back of the canopy. Something else new about this set is the mini figure. This time instead of a traditional driver we have a designer/test driver. What's not to love about the drafting table? Coffee. Check. Lamp. Check. Golden Car Award. Check. The utilization of the sticker there is great also. This mini figure also comes with a helmet. I wish every SC mini figure came with a helmet/hair option like this guy. Mine aren't always driving! I can't close out without mentioning the color again. It's new to SC. It's great having some of the old SC pieces in a new color. Folks, Lego has done it again. A fresh, new, one of a kind build in that familiar Speed Champions style and the finished product is sure to stand out among it's counterparts. This time, in Orange.
My son is getting older (10) and graduating from the cartoon character Legos to more sophisticated ones. He's been collecting, building and modifying the speed champions. Detailed and fun to play with and collect.
Okay, this set is interesting. The build is a good build but unfortunately it's not very accurate. The minifigure is neat and unique but one is kinda stingy, and he's also slightly plain. However, playability and price is good, like always.
75880 is a fantastic set. It takes a world-class supercar and presents it in brick form; and while some "brickiness" is inherent in the design, this McLaren's vibrant coloration, its smooth lines, and its stickered details contribute to a formidable and striking impression. I'd recommend it to car fans, and even just LEGO fans like me (relatively) uninitiated in the world of automobiles.
Overall it's a competent addition to the Speed Champions range but it's nothing special: apart from the colour and the designer's desk, it's pretty much just more of the same.
