Ultimately this score reflects that the App-Controlled Batmobile is not without faults in both model design and app functionality, but it's conceptually and functionally a strong and fun enough set that I would recommend it even at full price if an RC LEGO car or LEGO's Powered Up system interests you. They've come a long way, though there are improvements to be made yet.
Fans of Batman will like building the Batmobile and getting to drive it, though there might be a slight learning curve to getting a feel for the controller. The stunts and sound effects enhance the imaginative play for younger fans who want to create their own superhero stories for the Caped Crusader. Older fans will like the combination of LEGO building and R/C toy, plus the brand new look for the Batman minifigure.
The app is not worthy of the Lego name. It absolutely will not connect despite my device far exceeding all of the minimum requirements for an Android device. The instructions for the app and operation of the Bluetooth module are practically non-existent.
I have had an enormous amount of fun using a smartphone to control this unique LEGO set. [...] The Batmobile is a bit jumpy when it turns due to the sticky grip of the tyres. It would be interesting to see how this model would work with tracks similar to the 42065 RC Tracked Racer. The Bluetooth connection dropped out a few times when testing this but it was a quick process to re-establish this. Overall, the app controller worked really well and having the options with sound effects added some extra fun.
Pros: Exclusive Batman minifigure. New Bat weapons and elements. AC (App-Controlled) model with the new Powered Up function. Play value. Cons: Price on the high side. Requires kids to borrow their parent's smartphone to operate.
The set is built well for structure and strength, but just don't expect it to be completely indestructible. It maneuvers quite well and the build was extremely easy and seamless, such that even the hubs and motor were simply treated as just another element that needed to be put in place with little effort. The language of LEGO is quite well-polished — despite the increased complexity of connected devices with a software controller, simply pictures and diagrams sufficed, just like all previous LEGO sets. The minifigure is unique and from a known Batman franchise (the Arkham video game series), which will appeal to Bat-fans and collectors. And the best part? You've always wanted to swoosh and zoom your playsets, and this set actually makes that dream come true. We look forward to more remote-controlled LEGO sets in the future, and this is indeed a good way to kick off the new Powered Up features.
The main feature of the Batmobile is when it is paired up with the free app. The Powered Up app connects very fast once it is matched up with the Hub however I've had the connection drop a few times while I was playing with it but it only took one press to re-establish the connection. The two version of the Batmobile app gives very distinct play features although I prefer the blue side simply because it gives more power to the vehicle. The Batmobile works on carpet but it works best on smoother surfaces as the rubber tires are pretty grippy and may get caught in the carpet.
