This is one of my favorite Lord of the Rings LEGO set. In my opinion, the set is well balanced in the minifigure selection and the size of build. I got most of the member of the Fellowship of the Ring just by buying this set. The only downside is that I always dream of MOCing the whole cave but hard to come true.

Recommendation: meh 85 / 100 by Hinckley

The LEGO designers have done the movies and characters justice with an excellent product. It works as a model for fans and a great toy for kids. There's a lot of play features in it that don't necessarily work the way they're supposed to. However, they do spark the imagination and get kids thinking about simple machines like levers, without even realizing it. The new minifig molds are pure gold for fans and kids alike. The introduction of minifig elf and orc ears and some great new torso and face prints are sure to make their mark on MOCs and displays for ages to come. The build is more challenging than regular Castle sets with many a great amount of smaller detail pieces that are sure to challenge young builders and please the adult fan.

I bought this for my son (10 at the time), who is both a Lego and LOTR nut. Good purchase. the build isn't that hard, and there's some fun original pieces. The Cave Troll was a definite hit. The real fun for him came after it was completed. He had a lot of fun playing with the set; setting up traps, recreating scenes. In all, a solid seat that treats the subject not as art to be replicated, but as a place to imagine with.

This is a well made set containing many useful pieces and a great selection of minifigs. Given that it uniquely contains 1/3rd of the nine members of the Fellowship, including the ever-popular Legolas, it will be an essential purchase.

The Mines of Moria set costs about $80 and contains 766 pieces - that's a pretty good deal for a licensed set. If you're a big Lord of the Rings fan I would recommend this for sure. Additionally, if you're a castle builder you will find a lot of great parts in here. Aside from that though, I think most everyone else can do without it.

Overall it is a decent set but not quite as much fun to build or play as Helm's Deep set so I'd wait for sale to get this set. I'd also like to see more mine orc for that battle scene.

It's not a great build, since it does absolutely squat as a display piece. It's fun to set up different scenes, but other than that, there just seems like there's a lot of fluff in this set. Even with almost 800 pieces, the set feels kind of bland and way too messy.

9473 The Mines of Moria captures the particular scene from the Fellowship well, but beyond that, it's usefulness is limited. It's a tiny slice of the mines and one that fails to evoke the grandeur of the film's setpiece.
